UK's most dangerous road named

25/06/2007

The A682 has been named as Britain's most dangerous road, killing or seriously injuring nearly 100 people in the last decade.

Stretching for 15 miles from junction 13 of the M65 and Long Preston, the road is the only one placed in the highest risk category in the report from the Road Safety Foundation for EuroRap.

The report also claims that the death and injury toll on the A682 is no better than it was in last year's findings.

Problems which EuroRap has identified with the Lancashire road include being inconsistently maintained; having blind corners; and being badly marked for cyclists.

"The A682 fails on every collision type: junction and access road crashes; collisions with rigid roadside objects; overtaking crashes; pedestrian and cyclist collisions; and motorcycle crashes," said Dr Joanna Hill, head of the foundation's research.

She added that the "good news" is that "quick, simple and cheap" measures could be put in place to tackle higher risk routes.

EuroRap chairman John Dawson commented: "The government has a huge opportunity to develop a large-scale national programme of high-return safety schemes which would be supported by authorities across Britain. The UK is now falling behind those countries it used to lead only a few years ago because its pace in applying the results of research into safe road design lags behind the best."

Paul Smith, founder of the road safety campaign SafeSpeed.org.uk, said: "Much of the UK's road safety is founded on speed cameras and the oversimplified belief that speed kills. While the Department for Transport fiddles with vain attempts to influence vehicle speeds we are dying in our thousands due to bad driving."
