7 million drivers caught speeding

Nearly a quarter of drivers in Britain have been penalised for speeding in the past four years, according to official figures.

At least £500million was paid out in fines by around 7million drivers who were caught speeding.

And around 1million who broke the speed limit have notched up more than one conviction.

In total, the DVLA recorded 8.4million endorsements for speeding by 7.08million of Britain's estimated 30million motorists.

But Paul Smith, founder of safespeed.org.uk, said too many penalties were handed out while not enough was being done to crackdown on 'risky' drivers.

He added: 'Driving licence points used to be given to risky drivers. That was why we had the system. 'These days we're handing out points willy nilly to millions of safe drivers and the risky drivers can no longer be identified.

'This is so bad that a number of insurance companies have announced this year that they will no longer be using driving licence points to identify risky drivers.'

A total of 13.4million endorsements involving 11.2million drivers were recorded, according to the figures which were released after a Freedom of Information request.

The penalties stay on the licence for either four or 11 years. Drink and drug-related offences and convictions which involve a death incur the longest endorsements.
