The Gatso with most gotcha

By Andy Hemsley
A speed camera near Battle is top in the county for catching out motorists.
The camera, on the A21 at Johns Cross has flashed and booked 5,607 people in the last year.

The total of fines paid amounts to £168,000.

The grey and yellow Gatso camera has easily outstripped others in Sussex, including a camera on the busy Gatwick flyover and cameras on the A23 at Brighton.

Last year 25,000 speeders were snapped in Sussex, resulting in £1.5 million in fines - £669,000 of which went to central government.

Emma Rogers, from the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership, said: "We do use the money from
fines to fund roadimprovements in Sussex and
education on road safety, but a portion of the money goes back to Government."

Paul Smith, of the campaign group Safespeed.org.uk, said: "I am appalled by these figures. Distraction is more dangerous than speed."

Britain has the safest roads in the world until 2005 but since then has fallen to fifth in Europe.

Paul Smith said: "The decline began in 1994 - a year after speed cameras were introduced on a major scale.

"Speed cameras take police away from the roads, which by definition makes them more dangerous."

One motorist, who was caught out, said: "The camera is not easy to spot and it is deceptive because you suddenly hit a 30mph zone after a long stretch of A road with a 60mph limit.

I was clocked at 34 mph but still had to pay up."

The busiest 18 cameras nationwide coin £18 million a year. That means a driver is snapped every two minutes.
