Motorist face 6pts for speed
By George Pascoe-Watson
A PLAN to ban seeding drivers after just two offences triggered outrage last night.
Road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick believes a new sliding scale in fines and penalty points will cut road deaths.
He wants the current three penalty points doubled for going over 45mph in a 30mph zone or doing 90mph on a motorway.
Drivers would be automatically banned for six months after two convictions. And the £60 fine would rise to £100.
But drivers’ groups say it is wrong to target drivers doing 90mph on a clear motorway.
Paul Smith of Safe Speed fumed: “Road safety depends on drivers adjusting their speed to suit the conditions and this behaviour must be encouraged not denied.
“Drivers will rightly be concerned. Road safety efforts must be concentrated on real causes of road dangers.
“the pretending must stop. The lies must stop”
More than 1.1 million drivers have six or more points on their licences. They could be banned after just one more offence under the new system. The only good news is those just over the limit get a two point penalty.
