I'm on at 12:30 with George Monbiot talking about 'Brunstrom must go'.

2 interviews in 2 days with him? :) listening now

EDIT - 10 minutes later. I'm not sure how much longer I can listen to Vine, he does my head in :|

Could you not do Monbiot for libel there? "Paul is the official spokesman for boy racers" !!!

How did it go?

Got caught up in an unplanned conference call so missed it, worth me doing a listen again to later?

Cheers

Paul

Not really, didn't think it went too well personally. George insulted Paul, paul tried to make a case but Jeremy seemed to have stats suggestion Brunstrom was a success, I got the impression Vine was pro-brunstrom personally.

Other than that, it was focussed on that decapitated biker, they conveniently forgot he was on the wrong side of the road, had been caught twice speeding by cameras already on the day (if i remember correctly, do i?) and were blaming it all on the 100mph speed. Then they had call in's during which all seemed to be pro-brunstrom. An 'ordinary' member of public had her call accepted even though she'd appeared on a camera partnership promo video!

I'm surprised you didn't butt-in in indignation when he called you "the official spokesman for boy-racers". What a puerile little jibe.

Monbiot strikes me as somewhat simple. He's got a dumbed-down idea of whats going on, and spouts rhetoric. A little knowledge may be a dangerous thing, but it is even more so when its attached to a big gob.

A big gob on a nationally available newspaper too.

Listening to him saying Brunstrom was a hero was hilarious, and then he went onto say his 'area' has no speed cameras which is why there are people 'driving like idiots' - by his own admission, it's them driving like idiots that's the problem, not their speed

The thing that needs to get through to these people is with higher driver education standards and tougher tests - you wouldn't get 'boy racers' (or certainly not many of them).

Agreed. That was ad hominem mixed in with outright lies.

It's difficult. I was getting ready for the next bit, and it took me slightly by surprise. You can never make all your points, and after every interview there's room for regret about the points that didn't fit in.

Well got a reply back from them. One word: Whitewash.

Dear ***********

Thank you for your e-mail regarding 'Jeremy Vine'.

This piece centred on North Wales Police Chief Constable Richard
Brunstrom
showing images of a 40-year-old man at a private briefing on road
safety,
without seeking the permission of his family.

We're sorry you were unhappy with the debate between Paul Smith and
George
Monbiot.

The debate followed an extensive interview between Jeremy Vine and
Albert
Owen MP (Labour) who was calling for Chief Constable Richard
Brunstrom's
resignation.

As the programme essentially had two guests coming from the same point
of
view (Paul Smith and Albert Owen) and only one (George Monbiot) putting
forward the other side of the argument, we're satisfied that Jeremy's
interviewing technique was appropriately robust and brought more
balance to
the piece rather than less. Paul Smith was allowed plenty of time to
put
forward his views that Richard Brunstrom's road safety policy was
failing
because there was no clear evidence to suggest that it actually reduced
road deaths.

The programme was also careful to read out balanced comments from
listeners' and this included those listeners also featured on the
programme. Jeremy in no way insinuated that the motorcyclist killed
deserved what he got.

Your comments have been brought to the attention of the producer, Nick
Leake.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact the BBC.

Regards

Similar sort of stuff you could expect from a SCP or the Prime Minister's office really: Thanks for bothering to write, but you're wrong, everything is fine, head in the sand.

Par for the course with responses to complaints to the BBC. At least you had a "nice" reply. I complained about they way they covered a major news item a few years ago. I had a reply from one of their news editors. Unfortunately, he was snotty, arrogant, and rude.
