M/way works 'are speed traps'

By ONLINE REPORTER

RACING through motorway roadworks has resulted in motorists being hit with more than £5million worth of speeding tickets in the last year.

The 2006 figures show drivers are being caught out for breaking temporary speed limits imposed while roadworks are being carried out.

Figures reveal the M2, which runs for 25 miles through north Kent, was the most notorious stretch of road and has caught almost 17,000 speeding drivers.

The M40 London to Birmingham road has caught nearly 16,000 motorists while the M1 has netted almost 14,000.

Speed camera safety groups say drivers are being caught out because they don’t think temporary speed limits count.

Chris Rogers, Project Manager for Kent and Medway Safety Camera Partnership, which has responsibility for the cameras on the M2 and the M20, said: "We are becoming increasingly concerned with the public's apathy with temporary speed limits.

"Drivers seem to be making up their own rules and then falling foul of the actual law.

“Our message is clear: The limit starts where drivers see the first speed limit signs, which will be before the works start."

But Paul Smith, founder of the Safe Speed road safety campaign said: "These figures are an outrage.

"It's time for motorists to get angry. I'm convinced that Department for Transport know that speed cameras have made the roads more dangerous overall, but rather than own up to their deadly mistake they have shunted the responsibility for cameras onto local authorities.

“They would rather save face than save lives and they are clearly not fit for purpose."
