Constable banned for speeding

Resign call as 90mph police chief is banned

By Patrick Mulchrone 06/12/2007

A chief Constable faced calls to quit yesterday after being banned for speeding at 90mph.

South Yorkshire chief Meredydd Hughes, formerly Britain's most senior traffic cop, was clocked breaking the 60mph limit on the A5 in his Audi.

Safety campaigners Brake said: "He has undermined traffic police and should seriously consider his position."

Anti-speed camera group Safe Speed said: "The hypocrisy is breathtaking."

Hughes, 49 - former chairman of roads policing at the Association of Chief Police Officers - was banned from driving for six weeks and fined £300.

He did not appear in court but said in a statement: "I recognise this is a significant breach. There's never an excuse for bad driving. I should have paid more attention to my speed."

The married police chief was filmed at Wrexham, North Wales, at 8.17am while returning home to Sheffield.

His solicitor Huw Edwards told Wrexham court: "He doesn't seek to make any excuse and accepts he must be punished. He asks me to apologise."

Hughes has backed "less conspicuous" speed cameras. He has previously been given two fixed-penalty notices. Both have expired.

North Wales police boss Richard Brunstrom, dubbed the Traffic Taliban, is known for his hatred of speeders.

136MPH

...speed at which traffic officer Blair McMaster was clocked on A9 south of Inverness. Kept his job with Northern Constabulary despite a year's driving ban.

121MPH

...police driving instructor Bob Kennedy was banned for 18 months after claiming at Inverness sheriff court that he was test driving a car for an official course.
