Top traffic cop gets driving ban

Chief Constable for South Yorkshire, Meredydd Hughes, has been banned from driving for 42 days and fined £350.

Hughes was convicted yesterday after being caught on camera doing 90mph in a 60mph zone on May 28th this year.

Following the offence, Hughes resigned from his position as senior traffic officer for the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), where he campaigned for more speed cameras and even maintained that they should be made less visible.

It was claimed there was no connection between the speeding offence and Hughes' resignation.

Paul Smith, founder of Safe Speed road safety campaign, responded to the ban by saying that Hughes needed to "admit the truth and work to scrap the cameras which have caused all the trouble and get road safety back on track."

It is not yet known how this might affect Hughes' role as Chief Constable for South Yorkshire.

Do these people ever tell the truth about anything?

I used to believe what the police said. Not any more.

I imagine that the Government "ratting" on their pay award will make them even less willing to follow proper procedures etc.
