Paul Smith, founder of Safespeed died age 52

Anti-speed camera campaigner Paul Smith died last night aged 52.

The founder of the website SafeSpeed.org.uk is believed to have suffered a stroke or heart attack at his home in Fife, Scotland.

He had suffered two earlier heart attacks including one this summer.

Smith's work exposing failures of speed cameras had made him a respected and credible authority quoted frequently in national press.

Claire Armstrong, his partner of 22 years, said she planned to take over the running of the website.

She said he was talking on the phone when he “suddenly took some deeps breaths and stopped responding”.

“The thoughts from the doctors are that either he had a stroke or a vital artery became blocked,” she said.

Safe Speed's Paul Smith passes away Link

Crash.Net

One of motoring's leading lights passes away

Sad news has reached us this afternoon: Paul Smith, founder of road safety charity Safe Speed has passed away.

Known to most people in the motoring community as the man who flew brazenly in the face of the government's insane Speed Camera agenda, Paul lead the charge for genuine, educated road safety. His favoured analogy to describe Labour's solution to the 'road safety crisis': using a hammer to fix a wrist watch.

We'd like to join the entire automotive community in sending our deepest condolences to his family at this difficult time.

Paul's partner of 22 years, Claire Armstrong has already said that she will continue his work.
