A nursing sophomore was injured Tuesday after being hit by a vehicle on campus.
At 8:41 a.m., Alicia Oatman, was hit by a male driver while crossing the street in front of Pickard Hall. The UTA Police Department was unable to release the driver’s name Tuesday.
Susan Slupecki, public affairs media relations specialist, said the 20-year-old student has no broken bones but did suffer cuts and some bumps and bruises.
“She will be released from the hospital shortly,” Slupecki said.
She said she did not know the name of the hospital Oatman was transported to.
Oatman did not return phone calls to The Shorthorn.
Slupecki said the driver has been referred to the police department and that right now there is a preliminary investigation looking into whether the driver failed to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
Campus police secretary Freda Morrison said the official report could not be released until the end of the week.
According to
http://www.safespeed.org, if a car going more than 30 mph hits a person, there is a 50 percent chance they will be killed. If someone is hit at 20 mph, there is a 10 percent chance of death.
The speed limit at the scene of the accident is 15 mph, and whether the driver was speeding is still unknown.
Nursing Dean Elizabeth Poster said she hopes Oatman recovers quickly.
“We are very concerned about her status, and we look forward to know more of the details as soon as they are available,” she said.
