Well I watched the programme last night and the overall view seemed to be that cameras are rubbish!
FYI, its one of these phone-in shows where the public are invited to email, text and phone their opinions.
The presenter made it clear that the Police and DoE were invited and declined to attend. The Police refusal was mentioned several times. Even the people who were for cameras were not happy that the cops declined to come on and speak up. Also mentioned was the fact that no-one in officialdom appeared to know which roads were the most dangerous in NI, so how were the camera locations chosen?
They had a poll. IIRC "Do fixed speed cameras improve road safety" or something of that ilk. Result: Yes - 20%, No 80%.
Paul didn't get much opportunity to contribute (from Inverness studio) but he managed to point out that the fatality rate in the UK has stalled and will probably increase for 2003.
General consensus of opinion was that education is the way to go, not enforcement. (there's a surprise)
Hopefully another nail in the Scamera coffin
