I'm a studio guest on "Nolan Live" showing on BBC1, Northern Ireland at 11:10pm Wednesday 21st April. I fly to Belfast tomorrow afternoon.

I believe that they may also have a traffic superintendent in the studio. I'm looking forward to it.

Peter Roberts told me in email that:

BBC1 NI is on digital TV (Skybox) channel 943

I've just spoken to the show's producers.

The Police have chickened out.
The DoE (covering transport in NI) chickened out a while ago.
The camera partnership chickened out first.

Will ANY of these people ever face me?

Well I watched the programme last night and the overall view seemed to be that cameras are rubbish!

FYI, its one of these phone-in shows where the public are invited to email, text and phone their opinions.

The presenter made it clear that the Police and DoE were invited and declined to attend. The Police refusal was mentioned several times. Even the people who were for cameras were not happy that the cops declined to come on and speak up. Also mentioned was the fact that no-one in officialdom appeared to know which roads were the most dangerous in NI, so how were the camera locations chosen?

They had a poll. IIRC "Do fixed speed cameras improve road safety" or something of that ilk. Result: Yes - 20%, No 80%.

Paul didn't get much opportunity to contribute (from Inverness studio) but he managed to point out that the fatality rate in the UK has stalled and will probably increase for 2003.

General consensus of opinion was that education is the way to go, not enforcement. (there's a surprise)

Hopefully another nail in the Scamera coffin

Yes. What a day I had!

I was supposed to be flying from Inverness to Belfast via Edinburgh, but my plane couldn't land at Inverness for me to embark due to a plane broken down on the runway. Time went on and I missed the Edinburgh to Belfast flight, so a later flight was booked. But still no plane to take to me Edinburgh and the later flight was missed as well. Then came the idea of the Inverness studio.

But the Inverness facility was limited to say the least. One tiny room, distorted voices in my left ear only, no pictures from Belfast or the broadcast programme, and a quiet, but nevertheless rather disconcerting 0.75 seconds echo of my own voice also in my left ear.

One particular further problem was that it was very difficult to tell who was speaking - the range of irish accents made it hard for me to recognise voices, and the audio quality was such that I couldn't distinguish between callers and those in the studio.

Then there was the format of the program - hardly one that would lend itself to any sort of in-depth discussion. And it was, what? 15 minutes? before I had any opportunity to speak.

Then there was a taxi driver on the phone trying to tell us that cameras were a good thing and I had a go at interrupting and asked him about speedo checks in the vicinity of cameras, there were soon three people speaking at once and what with the echo and distorted audio I lost the contest.

All in all a pretty sorry show. But never mind. Onwards and upwards.
