Abi killer jail term probed

THE Crown Prosecution service is to re-examine the case of a killer hit-and-run driver who killed student Abi Craen.

Jaswinder Singh, 45, was jailed for 18 months for mowing down the 20-year-old on a crossing.

Yesterday it emerged that the Solicitor-General was to review the sentence given to Singh.

The move was revealed after Abi's mum branded the punishment an "insult."

Experts said the Birmingham judge followed official guidelines when he jailed maniac Singh, who admitted causing death by dangerous driving.

The CPS has seven days after sentence to lodge an appeal.

A spokesman for the CPS in the West Midlands said: "We still have several days to lodge an appeal if it (the sentence) is seen to be unduly lenient.

"Our senior lawyers are talking with the prosecution counsel to decide
whether to appeal.

"They will review the facts of the case, the judge’s comments and sentencing guidelines.

"No decision has yet been made."

Road safety campaigners demanded a revamp of the rules. Paul Smith, founder of the road safety pressure group Safe Speed, said: “We are losing faith with the way the legal system handles cases such as this.”

A spokesman for Solicitor-General Mike O’Brien confirmed: "He will examine whether the the sentence in the case was reasonable."
