yONKS AGO I asked if anyone could point me in the direction of an excellent post by IG on COAST. I thought it was one of the best bits of advice for a new driver,but it's vanished. I've done my one one based on what I can remember, but with a few experiences of over 50 years and possibly over 2-3 million miles between the wheel.
Comments are welcome -my eldest lad takes his test in a few months ,and I'd love to pass on some words of advice.

COAST.

Lets look at it in driving terms.
C = CARE not to upset other drivers, or forget that others are just human and can make mistakes , such as pulling out without looking.
C= Consideration not to get up set when care is not taken, or when a learner does something daft- NEVER forget we all had to learn. L plates to me ( after 50 years on the road- give the learner some room- I had to learn at one time) .
C= Courtesy- cost nothing, perhaps not even a second, as person you let out may respond n kind.

O =Observation. Means keeping eyes peeled in all directions to check for those who are wide awake at the wheel, with both eyes closed.
A= Anticipation- WHAT will the potential IDIOT in front of you do ?
S=Space – give others some room.
T= Time- Always make sure you have enough space to stop if vehicle in front does, but enough behind to stop being rammed from behind.

yes, whereas Care and Consideration are good safety tools, Concentration has to be the key one. Unfortunately, very few people seem to concentrate at all these days. The people that I see driving on a daily basis seen to be in a dream world with no idea of what is going on on the road, outside their immediate forward vision bubble of about 10 yards.

My views do not represent Safespeed but those of a driver who has driven for 39 yrs, in all conditions, at all times of the day & night on every type of road and covered well over a million miles, so knows a bit about what makes for safety on the road,what is really dangerous and needs to be observed when driving and quite frankly, the speedo is way down on my list of things to observe to negotiate Britain's roads safely, but I don't expect some fool who sits behind a desk all day to appreciate that.

Ten yards- you are very lucky- in this part of the world it's more like 10 feet. I'm beginning to wonder if the eyesight requirement should be changed from reading a numberplate at distance ,to being able to see a vehicle at same distance. At times, I often wonder if the guide dog might make a better driver. :shock:

Yes you are right 10 yards is probably exaggerating for some people. The number of times i've seem people pull up behind a bus at a bus stop so close that they don't realise that it's stopped to pick up and so close that they can't see that the road ahead is clear and safe to overtake it.

It's driver training. ( Something not taught in the driving test production line) - bus approaches bus stop ,folk waiting at stop. it's not rocket science ( or need the deductive genius of Sherlock) to think that bus will stop. So a THINKING driver will work on the principle that bus will stop, and allow viewing distance to see if they have clear line of sight to get round bus.
Every time, I follow bus ,I remember MY driving instructor telling me to look for bus stop, are folks waiting, and if so ,on a four lane road- GET OUT into L2, so if bus stops, then you are not blocked in. On a normal road- stay back, to see if way is clear to pull round bus.
Buses and vans/HGV are vehicles best given clearance, as space /events in front are not visible. What you need to see is road in front. With these - there's only a blank space.
