I noticed that once again the A444 through Coventry has road works on it... This time to install crash barriers on the outside lanes.

On the other side of these barriers is a grassy bank, nowhere near any footpaths or any other possible pedestrian hazard, ie wasteland. So "what's the point?".

If in a crash, I'd much rather go off the road into a bank than smash into one of these things and be kept on the carriageway. All it will manage to do it to ensure that there's lots of bodywork damage in the event of an accident.

If they've got money to spend why isn't it going on something worthwhile? What next? Tramway type rails in the road to keep us where we should be?

The problem with grassy banks is that they don't always stop you. If the ground is dry and hard you will go up the bank and get launched in to the air at the top.

Is there anything the other side of the bank you are talking about?

Wish I'd taken a photo... It's more a hill than a bank, I'd probably need a RR RB211 jet engine on the back to get up it!

Maybe there is a risk to the school over the bank, if it is term time, and play time, and if you are going very fast and don't brake.

But with roadside barriers there is a good chance of bouncing or spinning around back into the traffic and causing secondary collisions that will increase the casualty numbers - possibly causing your death when you are t-boned by a truck after all your airbags and other safety features have gone off already. If a vehicle has lost control it is nearly always much better to catch it off road than to bounce it back into the rest of the traffic - isn't it?

And then they can put cameras up. Kerching!

Left hand side going into Coventry between the Holbrook Way (the one after the Ricoh) & Foleshill Rd roundabouts.

Who's road is the A444 - county or Coventry.

Warks seem to be on a spending spree just now , roads and pavements ----tried WCC road repairs map - www.warwickshire.elgin.gov.uk ---
Found need download in IE to view, and FireFox 1.05(??? latest version is 2.00) , is not supported (just yet)---looks like another govt IT project

Nah, we get that for free due to a combination of shoddy road building/maintenance and lots of HGVs

A complete waste of money IMO, isn't there anything better they could spend it on?

And I sat in congestion here today, now there's a thought - why don't we have "road pricing"!

The M6 is at a standstill again as well. 4 sets of roadworks putting up barriers to protect the old fields... 50mph limit, average speed cameras to pay for it, narrowed lanes, all that's missing is some....workmen!

Makes my blood boil the utter stupidity in this country.
