In South Yorkshire we had an incident when a speed camera demonstrably caused a reduction in road safety.

When passing a speed camera at 68mph in a 30mph zone, the police officer concerned took his eyes off the road and took his hands off the wheel.

It is patently obvious that if there had been no speed camera there that the officer would not have taken his eyes off the road or his hands from the steering wheel.

Therefore this speed camera reduced road safety.

Can a "safety device" that has been shown to reduce road safety safely be left on the roads, streets and motorways of our country?

Explain how you know this - did the speed camera catch him at it?

Yes it did... twice in one night!
Have you not seen the thread and accompanying picture? :o

The speed camera seemed to have been a catalyst for some other ill feeling.
Maybe the police pay dispute? :?
No doubt many other motorists have their own reasons to find the cameas irksome - there was a case in Kendal a while back where a driver put 4fingers up at a camera - 2 on each hand!
In his case he was not speeding at the time - he was only doing 20 in 30 limit! :)

It's a long thread. Have a look at it and tell us what you think.

Which only goes to show: scp's use them for cctv as well !
Maybe we should let them use the cash for some plasma screen tvs' to watch instead....sorry, forgot. They already do !

56 years after it was decided it was needed, the Bedford Bypass is nearing completion. The last single carriageway length of it.We have the most photogenic mayor though, always being photographed doing nothing

But if it had have been a cctv system an operator could have sent an urgent message saying: "police officer in car so-and-so just took his hands off the wheel and gave a thumbs up to the camera at such-and-such a road. Sort the silly bugger out, please!"

I think he was lucky. Usually the only people who take both hands off the wheel to give a 'thumbs up', take their eyes off the road and gurn at a roadside camera are chavs. Not professional drivers of any kind, certainly not police drivers on an emergency call.
