Hi all,

did anyone see this last night on TV? Noticed cops putting on rubber gloves whilst driving (looked like he was steering with knee), not wearing seatbelts, tailgating, talking to passengers and cameras over their shoulder, horrendous manouveres/parking etc. And in other docus involving police (and civvys driving) I have noticed people using phone whilst driving, driving with interior light on at night and other bad habits at the wheel.

So what bloody example does this set when the police and media let this lax example of driving be shown to the general populus and then expect everyone else to drive safely?

Regards

Andrew

P.S. Is driving with interior light on not an offence? I'm sure it is.

I have to agree it was shocking to see just how bad the driving was.

I have noticed that on TV you see a lot of "in car" shots where people the occupants are not wearing seatbelts. Especialy rear seat pasengers. This is common on reality tv shows.

I think If I were going to be on TV I would at least have a seatbelt on.

Remember the David Blunkett scandal? Well there was a picture sprayed across the press showing him beign whisked away from some meeting or inquest and I noticed right away he wasn't wearing a seatbelt yet I heard nothing about it in the press or from anyone else. Look t the stink the press kicked up when Major I think it was was caught with no belt on.

Is this not a sign of our generally worse standards now?

Regards

Andrew

A lot of police officers tend not to wear seat belts whilst on duty. Our policy states that we are exempt from wearing them whilst escorting prisoners, as it is not nice to be strangled with your own belt.

It is a fact however that many officers tend not to wear them at all, as it hinders fast exit from the vehicle should the need arise. Now I know some will say yes you will exit the vehicle very quickly in a crash i.e. via the windscreen. The other problem is that seat belts get caught up in our belt kit, briefly trapping you, or ripping off your equipment.

The one I really noticed was "Car Wars Special" (a while back now) where a group of marked & unmarked cars were chasing joy-riders around Glasgow.

What did we get? The officer leading the team was driving the car, and directing other cars using a hand held radio (not attached to the car) that he placed between his legs when the high speed drving got a too little hairy for him to do one handed.

So no consideration for what would happen if he had to brake hard - would that radio get jammed under the pedals? Why couldn't one of the other 2 officers in the car either drive or relay the radio messages? Couldn't the front seat passenger at least hold the radio for him? Didn't notice the seat-belt - at a time of don't use your mobile while driving I was stunned by the examples being given on prime time television of how it should never be done.

Perhaps the officer concerned was so delighted by his chance to play Bruce Willis or Clint Eastwood, that he forget about things that he would normally never do... or perhaps he does it all the time.
