The speed camera at Bennetts Bank, Wellington, is not to be replaced. Many feel it should never have been put there in the first place, as the accident figures used to justify it were fiddled, if not faked, in the views of many.

Yes in my 54 years of living in the area, I have never seen an accident where the camera was placed...I have,however, seen MANY at the cross roads just a few hundred yards away, so was speed really an issue or just people jumping the lights/failing to give way?

My views do not represent Safespeed but those of a driver who has driven for 39 yrs, in all conditions, at all times of the day & night on every type of road and covered well over a million miles, so knows a bit about what makes for safety on the road,what is really dangerous and needs to be observed when driving and quite frankly, the speedo is way down on my list of things to observe to negotiate Britain's roads safely, but I don't expect some fool who sits behind a desk all day to appreciate that.

We hear that plans are afoot to privatise speed cams?

Well .. in Arizona - we have had a switch off on the fast roads (KSI not suffered - reduced actually on those roads per the stats ) and a rekindled referendum move on the urban ones - and you can thank the SWISS contingent for that one

But over here - cams are run by a private firm. Most refuse to pay the fines anyway

Hmmm.. I not our Kev's still claiming his speed cams will stay,... OI Kev! Wait till yiou get yer budget on that one :p

UPDATE-at last record , the submariner was called "Greenshed" ( on here) , on PH ,he changed from "Pitsmansboots" to more recently "Puff the magic" - and we haven't seen GS come up from the depths for a long time - perhaps he's met up with the Cumbrian version of Nessie ,and twins are on the way
