Sorry if this has already been posted (couldn't see any myself) but last night, about 1.30am (on BBC1 as well for some reason), there was a think ad which went something like,

You teach your children about english
you teach your children about maths
you teach your children about <something else>

and then they say something like do you teach your children about road safety?

and in slow motion show a kid running into a road (and a suddenly panicked mother).

And the slogan was something like, "make sure you teach you children about road safety".

Anyway didn't get it all cos I was looking at ceefax at the time.

But anyway, it was really pleasing to see an advert like this. There does seem to be less education on road safety from parents these days. And it's good that they didn't use shock tactics either.

 At long last, a meaningful balenced road safety advert (I've not seen it), no-one can complain about that. Now all that’s needed is for parents to accept their share of responsibility for their children.

But how many parents of young children will be watching TV at 1:30am? Certainly not us as we go to bed at 10:30pm as we have to get for 6:30 every morning...

Still we might see it eventually. It is certainly about time that the Think! campaign recognised that the best way to avoid the little angels being turned onto mush by the anti-social, planet killing, selfish, evil speeding motorist (a.k.a. cash cow, a.k.a. everybody that has to work for a living), is for them not to be in the road in the first place.

went to my local retail park last saturday. As I was driving though looking for a space a young girl of about 10-11 was trying her best not to run on the pavement. She clearly wanted to cross the road into the car park. She found a ped exing and calmly pulled off a text book crossing manouver. I was so impressed I nearly stopped and hugged her, but thought I'd get arrested and put in a cell with Gary Glitter.

Some body taught her and she listened.

Might happen at sametime that LA / the parents who don't care where their kids are as long as out / the tree huggers and Uncle tom cobley realise that play areas ( like the MUGGA's being installed by councils) are for play, like recreational grounds - cars etc are banned from these areas - Police reform act notices threaten confiscation - roads are for vehicles .
Perhaps we need to re educate those in charge of roads policy of this fact, and start looking at prosecuting parents who allow them to play in/on the road

whilst about itSounds like a darned good advert.

How about slotting between the goings on down Coronation Street. Or would this be too much to take in between the dreardry goings on with Drearydre and Ken, or whatever. or whoever..

Sure I make sure all our own kids and those we foster fully understand dangers and how to use the Green Cross Code. I have been approached by a parenting magazine for interview and article on my parenting skills - just to show off 8-)

I think I will do the interview and plug this site    whilst about it.

However, back to seriousness.

Being a parent - a normal parent - it really is the hardest job on earth. I have an obligation, moral and bounded duty to bring up children to be responsible adults - capable of making their own moral and ethical decisions and I do tell them that mistakes are normal and nothing to be ashamed of. However, I do tell them that they should chalk these up to experience, learn from them and try not to do them again.

I make them aware of danger and give a parental strategy to deal with this .. but then I do make a point of chatting and making a lot of time for my kids. We try to do most things as a family unit and I think this and the fostering is why a magazine targetted at parents wants an interview with us. Only we would be preaching to the converted  as per usual  when the people who need the advice are the very people who cannot afford £3 for a magazine

Still .. I think I may sign on the dotted line .. and focus on road safety issues as part and parcel of good parenting. ;)

MM - DANGERS - my eldest grandaughter now has had several broadsides from me about road safety - she knowns about looking , and a good shouting at helps reinforce it.
Rather than in between Carnation St /Emerdale - the producers of this THINK ad , might be better placed to put it into practice , free on one of these programms or highlight the consequences. Then the masses might get the message -"oh it says so on Carnation St - it must be true"

Yep - you are right. People do take more note of soaps than anything else.

Hey.. perhaps a Big Brother TASK should be that the chavs inside that house dream up a road safety ad :yikes:

Or maybe Pop Idol should insist on a rubric of singing a hedgehog song or writing a catch COAST tune.

Kriss has the pomes

Have you seen the stupid one that they have in the background on (i think) Coronation Street?
Says "Driver in a Hurry, Child in a Coma" in massive letters on what looked like a bus stop. I've seen it in the background a few times now and I can't stand Coro, so it must be on a fair bit.

Should be changed to "Child in a Hurry, Child in a Coma: Follow the Green Cross Code you little morons" IMHO.
