The government has set a target for 50% of students to go to university.

Why dont we campaign for a target of 50% of road users to pass advanced training courses. This would play nicely to the government's target-oriented culture and get us the driver education that we all need.

This could cover:

1) voluntary participation like the IAM - subsidised by the govt from savings resulting in the lower number of accidents that would result.
2) enforced membership for everyone who has been involved in 2 or more accidents in the 3 years - enforced by insurance companies. No advanced pass, no insurance, no license, car/bike impounded etc. Paid for by the license holder.

Back this up with an advertising campaign extolling the benefits of being an advanced driver/rider.

It would also need very stringent enforcement of people driving without insurance if the insurance enforcement route was to be used.

It also needs a carrot e.g. pass your advanced test and have points removed from your license?

For the record I'm an IAM bike observer.

What do you think?

Yeah - I did look at that before posting but thanks anyway. My approach is slightly different to just "retesting" - it's based on using the governments fixation for targets for our own benefit. However, the overall effect will be the same.

What we need is a way to make something actually happen - a straightforward push for regular retests is a little bland, but a nice target with words like "education" in it - now that's a different story altogether.

Hmmm! Targets? The scammers apparently set targets as well! That is supposed to be for our benefit too!

The prats have been known to say: "The speed camera is the motorist's friend! ." and "Speed cameras save lives!"

And of course with the "Education! Education! Education" and 50% undergraduate target which has led to accusations (right or wrong) that the exam system has been dumbed down. (Well - in our day - you were darned clever to get those As and study medicine - not that I am biased - no, no, no!)

Should we do same thing with IAM? May lead to same accusation - especially if we see no improvements on the road! (Well the other 50% may have more accidents  )

Nah! Still see assessments with grades as carrot as initial sticky plaster over the cuts and grazes, whilst we work on more refined and pratical solutions!

The Mad Lad himself!
