I took my driving test in December 03 and throughout the test i was not questioned at all about braking distances or safe gaps. I wasnt even asked to perform a 'controlled stop' as they like to phrase it now. I was approached by an ambulance with blue lights on and so dived into a space beside the road to allow him through. this got me a minor for not indicating! not a well done for early observation and good positioning!
As for learning the car i drive i started with a Puegeot 205 Diesel with very inconsistant brakes. This certainly taught me about safe distances to the point where you could park the Queen Mary 2 in the space i would leave! I would regularly have a good look about and if it was all clear around me slam the brakes on and try not to lock a wheel. You know what practice makes....
Safe stopping without tyre smoke.
