Before anyone jumps down my throat, I am not sexist at all. This is just an observation based on personal experience.

Women drivers have fewer accidents so their insurance is cheaper than mens, right?

OK. Try this. My wife can, or could when we were in the UK, get her insurance nearly 30% cheaper than I could by going to the websites and shopping around. The reason cited was that women have fewer accidents so they must be safer drivers than men.

The thing is.... my wife would flatly refuse to drive when the weather wasn't good or when traffic was heavy. Absolute and total refusal so Joe Muggins would have to take the wheel. Not a problem but still..

When do most accidents happen? When the weather isn't so great or when the traffic is heavy.

In other words.... when the man is driving because the woman refused to.

Any thoughts?

Women defintely drive lower annual milages than men on average. Whatever the reason that means they are less exposed to the risk of crashes.

If the mileage that the ladies DON'T do is higher risk mileage, that would multiply the effect.

Insurance premiums are based on risk per year, not risk per mile.

yes and per mile women have about the same number of accidents as men, although last I read they still tend to be lower damage accidents - ie they're more likely to hit a post in the supermarket than a tree in a NSL. No doubt this is because men still do most of the family 'away' driving.

Acording to insurance statistics mile for mile Women are safer than men up to the age of 38. After that men are safer.

Have you got a reference for that please?

Ist probably one of those insurance surveys  They probably will blame the biological clock beginning to tick away for this

I was afraid you were going to ask that. I will have a look. It was a report that was released a couple of years ago. It showed two graphs, men and women against age. Men started off "dangerous" and got safer while women stayed flat. The cross over point was 38. I will do some digging.

In this family - ist shared 50/50 :hehe: Und Nein - have never hit post in supermarket or any other car park either.

Perhaps wimmin do not hit the same kind of speeds .. from the reps und others we know who did the Lancs course - it seem from their descriptions of course und invitees that high proportion of wimmin in later 30s und even balance of the blue rinse/silver haired brigade. get invite.

But ja - I know several who let their husbands do the long holiday drives. I would not dream of allowing Mad Doc to do this - because of fatigue on long journey. Driving ist shared und our eldest now take over some of the drive as well.

I found this doing a search. Women drivers: Are they better than men?

Looks like it came from Admiral Insurance.

Another Link Women drivers 'better' claim proved

The average "male" figures are distorted because the small minority of genuinely dangerous and reckless drivers (3 times the drink-driving limit, 70 mph down the High Street etc) are overwhelmingly male.

From my experience I wouldn't say the "average responsible" male driver was any worse than his female equivalent.

As I said, I am not slighting women drivers. My wife is a good, cautious driver. She got used to the different driving over here in short order, and the weather is more extreme here.
It was just an observation, and I was wondering if the insurance companies are a little anti-man.
Cross over at 38, eh? Another year and I'll be safer than women drivers then.
:D

Another upshot of this fallacy (Mrs MGBGT has points - I don't!) is that bloody awful 'Sheila's Wheels' advert. I wonder how long it would be before there was a hue-and-cry if 'Blokes Only Insurance' started trading - not very long, I'm sure...

Equality - my @rse!

Glad you said that. That ad is terrible, isn't it. I just didn't want to go near that argument in case I was accused of something.

This is because at that age, we start to forget what on earth we went out in the car for :? Now I can say that :D

Tis strange though; women supposidly live longer therefore age less quickly but in some respects functionality starts to get impaired (no wisecracks here! ) It has to be the hormonal thing. After all, lets be honest here (I'll mention it so you don't have to worry about being 'sexist') it's known that at certain times of the month women are more prone to be clumsy!

FWIW I find the sheila's wheels ads extremely irritating. Also you might be interested to know that all of these so-called 'womens specific' insurers actually turn out significantly more expensive for me. Probably something to do with the fact that I don't drive an 1100cc car 5000 miles a year.

I've also made several observations that would suggest that women in general are actually WORSE drivers. Generally if I see someone blocking a junction, dithering, generally looking confused and scared behind the wheel, its a woman. (And I'm allowed to say that :D )

Bob. I don't think you'll find any ardent femenists here so don't worry about ruffling too many feathers!

yep, my mum won't drive on the motorway, won't drive abroad, won't drive any kind of long distance (over about 35miles), won't drive any vehicle other than her own and won't drive my dad unless he's ill because he makes her more nervous than usual.

I agree to a certain extent Sixy. Spatial awareness is another problem too I have to say it's usually (but not always :P ) women drivers that cut you up when returning to lane 1 after an overtake.

Women tend to have different faults from men. If you see someone driving/riding like an absolute knob, odds on it's a man.

Are you saying that men drive like knobs but women can make a boob of things?
