This I think most important of all within the leaflets

I think very sound lay-man advice.

Please all who lurk.. browse.. whatever.. print out und keep for a reference. I think Lancs Prats have given sound advice on many issues - apart from the speedy mattery ones - of course

But these people do teach und assess per the COAST model.. they teach to observe und reign in accordingly. Whilst I am not happy with manner of the refresher courses und would argue that the invitees are not the ones who need .. a friendly warning would suffice for these und the course should be offered to those who really need it.

I'd rather a course offered to the blatters und a positive learning curve than festering anger und no skills improved.

Think about it. You know Paulie wants safety first.

The Swiss family acknowledge this.. they would not be loosely on his side otherwise.

Yes .. there are some issues which Paulie need to take a hard look at .. but in this matter he ist no different to the prats who also need to take similar hard looks at policies und - as we all learn more.. so we adjust und revise opinions based on the evidence which appears..

I do this all the time in my day job. My fun hobby of driving cars.. riding motorbikes.. riding bicycles.. riding horses.. occasionally sailing on the local Derwentwater .. I evaluate und try to learn und improve each time.

For record .. I have one sister (Krissi) .. two brothers .. Knut und Hansl.

I have several cousins .. including lieber IG's und his siblings und other cousins. The Swiss surviving total ist .. 5 girlies (including me) und 23 males.

We are admittedly unusual in that we are all very keen advanced drivers .. though I suppose natural sibling/family rivalry ist a part of this. We all try to improve our skills und we do not do "stupid" or drive cars or ride bikes dangerously, carelessly or negligently. We use COAST und we do so "consciously". That ist rather semi-automatic to be honest .. as humans will perform certain routines in that fashion. But sub-conscious ist powerful.. ist the "survival red alert button". Ist being researched... we still do not fully understand it... und each generation has developed differently according to the situation it ist surviving in...

I give example.. if we softy Westerners transported to famine ridden African state und live as they do .. we die in days. The natives struggle painfully for months .. even a year or two before succumbing to the starvation und diseases.

I hope und think I try to say .. we adapt.. programmed to survive.. want to survive . ... und we procreate for that reason really.. we want our genes to continue.. ist our legacy und proof we existed within our allowed three score und ten if you like.

But please browsers/lurkers/critics .. do download the leaflets I have scanned for you,.. I do not see why naughty drivers in North West alone should have such advice .. though am not convinced by the token speed ones .. but as a "rebel" :hehe:..

Yeah - I concur? 99% of the post has absolutely nothing to do with the subject.

Oh for heaven;s sake! My wife scanned the leaflets as a series and perhaps used this last scan to pull the series together/

BC - yet again you come across as a very petty minded person who really cannot be taken seriously on any road safety issue.

As for Martin.. my wife apologised to your wife. I expect you to apologise to mine.

PS Do be warned .. I will defend my wife with my dying breaths. In my defence of making such an apparently "cheesy"-ish comment.. I nearly lost my wife once and I am just grateful that she is still here to annoy me and others

MM - that post is as extraordinary as the first.

This Forum gets odder and odder. Lots of noise to signal. Mostly like this thread.

BC - I do not know who you are or why you are so pompous as to expect every single word to be justified to you.

I shalll not bother to respond to you or even read your posts in future as you do not really post anything to lend to the debate. You seem to target me und my husband und make snide petty little comments for the most part from what I see of your posts on here.

I lost my temper once with you on another thread for some reason und contacted Paul as I worried about being a bit rudey at the time. He agreed there had been a lot of provocation on your part und told me not to worry so - und it takes a lot to really annoy me. I have to have a lot of patience with all them kittens of ours.. (und I include the Mad Doc in that  )

The posts of these leaflets were posted up as a series. I initially considered bundling them all together in one thread.. then split as I then decided that people may wish to discuss the contents of them (especially the speed und motorcycle one) on their own merits (or dismerits - is that a word? ) :? Perhaps you had better read the whole of them.. und maybe you will learn something.

I posted up the leaflets which are only given to those who were invited to the course (or got pinged by Drivesafe). My argument ist that they should be available to ALL und I have scanned to make them available to more peoples und posted up my opinion to this effect.

All should be given access to or sight of these leaflets. - so I have made it so!

Most of us learn from experience as well as the basics of the education. Ist how we all use our intelligence to interpret all this which matter und carry us upwards und onwards through life. We all should be learning und I passed the comment that we all at least try to all the time.

My other comment ist that we adapt to condtions as they develop as well und also we make a new set of rules. You want more cyclists.... more cyclists will bring about laws... ist a nanny state we live in - The laws on helmets und so so .. they will become so should millions take to bikes. Ist inevitable. Face facts. We adapt und bring in new legislation to deal with changes to lifestyles und only a naive fool would think otherwise.

I really fail to see what your problem ist und I shall not reply to any more such plainly personally attacking comments made by you - und be honest - you do this all the time. You do not actually POST anything to do with actually improving safety for all und drone on about cyclist "rights" when not attacking me und Ted und making what can be construed as rather silly ad hominem attacks.

They have the same rights as I have .. und I have the right to drive, walk, ride a horse, ride a bike without being threatened by any other road user und that includes cyclists (or drivers) who jump red lights, ride on pavements or ride their mountain bikes at high speed down Fell trails with scant regard to the walkers.

Paul - I was going to put all that in a pm to this person. However, we all know that IG did pm him once und we got all manner of innuendo as to what IG said to him So much so that IG ended up rather reluctantly posting it up in the Members Suite for comment upon it at the time.

Thus - I decided not to bother replying in private as this would mean more stupidity in making various allegations as to what was posted in private.

RE: RTA,

I was under the impression that 999 doesn't work from a mobile? (I thought it was 112 - thankfully I've never had reason to check it so I don't really know)

no, 999 or holding down 9 works from a mobile. Unfortunately I've had plenty of experience dialling it.
Isn't 112 the European number?

Actually, I believe Paul should take a step back and look at how this forum comes across to interested new comers. The site gets a fair bit of media coverage and there will no doubt be many people that come and look round.

The static pages give a lot of information, but I'd expect many of the new users to come and look at the forum. So - take a step back and look at some of the posts. This thread is a prime example. A semi-interesting leaflet posted, German in the title (what is that about?) with a very long post after it that adds little to the original message. I'd bet that 90% of the readers of the thread would do a "WTF?" and move back, carefully.

There's another example here.

1,500 word post from In Gear
750 word post from Wild Cat
900 word post from Mad Moggie
1,400 word post from IG
1,900 word post by IG
800 word post by Wild Cat
666 word post by Wild Cat

These are just the long posts, there are more. Every one of them could have been distilled down to a readable post making the points clearly and concisely - as almost all other posts on here are. What was an interesting thread was just swamped by huge numbers of words. Even the subject of the thread is driven to exasperation: "I've not read properly through the last two pages. There is too much there. " (ed o Brain).

The thread, which is about a case that is of huge significance to cyclists and motorists, was smothered. It would be fascinating to see what any newcomers think of it.

My personal view is that the forum has a large noise to signal ratio and that this damages the site's and Pauls aims. I've tended to visit here much less over recent months and I don't think that is going to change.

Some of you might welcome that, but I'd say that the forum needs credibility with the public much more than I need credibility with some posters on the forum.

(350 word post - apologies for length :D )

I have to admit I tend not to read posts either written in a foreign language or with hundreds of smilies. Other than that, long posts are fine by me if they're on topic (just like this one??? oops.) and coherent

I suggest that we move the discussion onto a separate etiquette thread. I've got some fairly strong views about it, as I'm sure most people have, but I don't think it will do anyone any favours to get into a slanging match here.

Yes, a separate thread would be good.

Also, I've said my bit. I'll not come back on this one.

Both 999 and 112 work from mobile phones.
112 is the European standard emergency number so should work in any phone anywhere in Europe. (Including Andorre)
I have a feeling that as mobile phones "know" that 999 and 112 (and sometimes others) are emergency numbers it doesn't say to the cell site "I would like to make a call to telephone number 999" but instead it sais "I would like to make an emergency call". I might be wrong. :)

999, 911, 112 and even 08 will all call the emergency services from a mobile. The vast majority of phones will let you dial all those lot even with the keypad lock on too (Nokia removed 08 recently though, I guess that's a bit too easy to type accidentally).

999, 911 and 112 will all work. This is standard agreed by all manufacturers.

If you could get into the phone software (firmware), you could program any number you liked to be the same.

On a mobile, you don't actually dial the emergency number, it connects at high power to the nearest available cell as an emergency call, rather than with a call routing code (otherwise known as a phone number!).

Normallly, once a mobile is connected to the network, it reduces its output power to that necessary to maintain contact - this conserves the battery. For safety, an emergency call is always sent at high power.

Just out of curiosity, is that the nearest cell regardless of operator, or the nearest cell within your operator's network?

I rather think a lot of people will read your post BC and think you are a sad pathetic person with far too much time on his hands.

I mean.. to sit and count the number of words in a post. Snide remarks yet again against a set of related posters to the site. I leave people to draw their own conclusions.

What a Sad x:censored: x person...

Such people are beyond contempt in reality.

My wife happens to be foreign and apart from her tendency to type "und" instead of "and" and "ist" instead of "is" - something she has never been able to correct unless she uses the spell checkers - her English and syntax is of a much higher standard than most on here whose spelling and inability to use capital "I" and various howlers in spelling - not typos - leave much to be desired.

Perhaps BC should place his own posts through a spell/grammar check  before he starts chucking stones in glass houses.

The thread you are banging on about... .it is about inconsiderate cycling and not about "rights".

We only have one side of the story. We do not have the arresting officer's story. There must have been some reason for bringing the case.

But what was BC's contribution to this "landmark case" which did not even make it to the dailies and no one seems that bothered down our local (but are over speed cams and PC Milton)

Not much other than droning on about rights when the issue is "lack of consideration to other road users" and how Dan has to prove it was not and do so without coming across as "militant rights brigade" But this simple factor is beyond BC who only wants make personal attacks on people on an internet forum.

Oh - I was also told by BC to "draw some conclusions because the same judge acquitted the 159 mph cop of speeding" when the cases are very different in nature - and Milton's second trial was not about "speeding" but "dangerous driving" for which he has been convicted and discharged of penalty - but which has grounds for appeal on a number of points of law apparently.

So.. not much worthy of note.. other than ignorance of the machinations of how the law works and subjectivity because the guy rides a bicycle of course.

By the way - pro the Eddy Brain chap. Come across as genuine and he does not make ad hominem atttacks nor comes across as a prize twit.

Regardless of operator. I believe it will even work with no SIM card present.

Without a SIM card it tries, but (many years ago when I tried) it fails. It depends if the opperators allow SIM-free emergency calling.
I presume that if it has a SIM card it should try that network first, especially as it can then identify the SIM card and possibly the identity of who's phone it is...
