Force names new chief constable

A new chief constable has been announced for the Cumbria force.

Cumbria Police Authority said the new man in charge was to be Craig Mackey, the present deputy chief constable of Gloucestershire Police.

The appointment follows the retirement of Michael Baxter after six years in the post.

Mr Mackey began his career with Wiltshire Police in 1984 and was appointed deputy chief constable of Gloucestershire in 2005.

Reg Watson, chair of Cumbria Police Authority said: "We are absolutely delighted to appoint Mr Mackey as the new chief constable.

"Cumbria is already a good performing constabulary and Mr Mackey will be able to maintain and further develop performance that has been achieved in recent years.

"We look forward to working with Mr Mackey as he takes the constabulary to the next stages in ensuring that the people of Cumbria feel safe, satisfied and reassured.

"Mr Mackey has an excellent policing background and already has a good understanding of the issues that face Cumbria.

"Presently, we are negotiating with Gloucestershire Police Authority for a start date."

Mr Mackey added: "Cumbria Constabulary has a good reputation, both locally and nationally, and I look forward to maintaining and building that reputation further."

Mr Craig Mackey took up his appointment as Deputy Chief Constable of Gloucestershire Constabulary in March 2005.

Following four years working for BP Shipping, Mr Mackey joined the Wiltshire Constabulary in 1984 and after training, was posted to Swindon where he served until promotion to Sergeant in 1990. In 1991 he attended the Accelerated Promotion Course at Bramshill and was promoted to Inspector in 1992.

On promotion to Chief Inspector he returned to Swindon and had responsibility for Operational Policing for half of Swindon. In 1998, he was selected as a specialist staff officer for Her Majesty's Inspector of Constabulary based at the Home Office. In 1999, he returned to Wiltshire as Superintendent Operations for North and West Wiltshire. In January 2000 he was posted to Headquarters Operations department with responsibility for control rooms, criminal justice, traffic services, air support and security operations.

Prior to his appointment as Deputy Chief Constable Mr Mackey held the position of Assistant Chief Constable since November 2001.
