Cameras just part of the story

Published on 12/01/2005

ALAN Marsh’s comments (Letters, January 4) regarding the number of deaths in road accidents and the efficacy of safety cameras are made at face value and without the background knowledge that we possess but which are unable to divulge as coroners’ inquests have not yet been held.

Also, to concentrate on fatalities ignores the positive effect the cameras are having on the reduction of serious injury accidents.

We have never stated that safety cameras are the sole method by which to reduce fatal and serious injury road accidents, and much of our work involves in-depth statistical analysis and educational and promotional activities.

We work on the Three Es – education, engineering and enforcement – and the safety camera project is part of a national 10-year plan. This is just one tool being used to reduce fatal and serious injury accidents and we work closely with a number of organisations in Cumbria towards this end.

We don’t believe that bad driving practices can be changed overnight, something that is borne out by the number of people killed this year. It is our aim – and that of our partners – to make drivers aware of their responsibilities.

We are aware of the enormity of the task but are committed to reducing the unacceptable level of fatal and serious injury accidents and are bolstered by the fact that research shows that the majority of Cumbrians support the scheme.

It's funny how that alleged majority support doesn't result in any member of the public being prepared to support the CSCP on their own forum

We can expect to see increasingly bizarre attempts by the SCP's to justify their stance, as it becomes more and more apparent that the figures just aren't playing fair (as far as they're concerned)

After all, they absolutely depend on continued revenue from cameras to fund their cushy jobs.

Peter

"a positive effect on the reduction of serious accidents"

Apart from the ones that kill you...in which effective looks to be negative going by the 04 body count.
