I saw this in our local rag and had to smile....

http://www.newsandstar.co.uk/news/viewa ... ?id=538757

"...THE chairwoman of Brampton chamber of trade has been banned from driving after notching up 21 points on her licence for speeding.

Linda Harmer-Jones, 48, who runs The Box Room in Brampton’s Market Place, already had 15 points on her licence when she was caught speeding on the A6071 at The Sands.

The Hallbankgate parish councillor and school governor, who lives at Farlam Ghyll, admitted speeding at 54mph in a 30mph zone on March 14 and was banned from the roads for six months yesterday...."

There is more detail in the article (including a defence by a solicitor who I wouldn't want defending me on a similar charge)!

I'm curious how she was still driving with 15 points anyway?

Still, while I obviously feel sorry for her, (a bit anyway - 54 in a 30 is probably pushing it somewhat!), this kind of thing is, I think, all to the good. The more "ordinary" high profile "pillars of the community" who get done (whilst at the same time failing to make any appreciable imact on KSIs WHATSOEVER), the better. Hopefully it will only be a matter of time before the general public see the current enforcement practices for what they are!

I think if I had 15 points I would be driving round in a milk float not 54 in a 30!

Parish councillor, huh. These are usually the people who campaign for inappropriately low limits through "their" village to stop "maniacs" speeding.

Hoist by own petard comes to mind. :)

If she was on say 9 points and the got 6 points, she'd be liable for a totting up ban unless she demonstrated undue hardship (which can't be used twice).

I bet Callaghan is pleased with this! Another major contribution to road safety.

I'm in two minds over this - it is her family who will suffer - getting kids to school around this area is no simple task if you have a business to run!

However, she does rather seem to have a lead foot!

Maybe it's something to do with her coming from Hampshire... she wont be used to the topography yet!! Our hills can keep you rolling on even when you lift your foot off the gas! :) She should get a diesel... or a Tandem!!

I dunno - she might well not be the kind of person they'd want to be seen ridding us of! It would be interesting to see her accident history but if banning her (and plenty like her) isn't bringing the road deaths down in Cumbria (and I don't believe it is  ), this only serves to highlight the futility of it all.

It would be very interesting to study the co-relation with driving offences and accident history of damage only and injury accidents.

It would be interesting if the courts got a report from the insurance database in serous motoring cases. Different trends and behaviors might be identified.
