Two teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a stolen car hit and seriously injured a police officer.

The blue Vauxhall Corsa hit Pc Jonathan Sherlock and a police car when a stinger device was deployed following a chase near Cockermouth, Cumbria.

Pc Sherlock, 31, was taken to hospital following the incident early on Friday.

A 17-year-old and a 14-year-old, both from the Carlisle area, were arrested at the scene.

Police said the Vauxhall was reported stolen from an address in Carlisle about an hour before the crash.

The car later stopped at a petrol station Workington, but its two passengers ran off without paying for fuel.

'Difficult time'

A police chase then took place when the car was seen driving erratically and at high speed on the A595.

Officers tried to stop the vehicle with the stinger device near Fitz Cottage roundabout, where the road joins the A66, at 0515 BST.

Pc Sherlock, of Carlisle, is being treated at West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven, where his condition is described as serious but not critical.

Deputy Chief Constable Christine Twigg said: "When an incident like this happens to an officer going about their normal duties it has a major effect on family, colleagues and the wider community.

"As a constabulary, we will do everything we can to provide support at this difficult time."

Apparently the vehicle was taken at 4.00am.
What on earth were the parents doing while their son was out at that time of night?

It's worth noting that anybody out on that road at that time of night was at risk from these scum - and the unfortunate owner will suffer too while his vehicle is investigated by SOCO - and if it has been damaged.
Let's hope he isn't charged for the storage of his vehicle before he is able to get it back as has happened in the past!

To be fair: could they have known? There’s a greater than good chance they would have been sound asleep.

I regularly used to sneak out at night when I was young (my dad is handy around the house, always fixes squeaky floorboads/steps), I was never caught.

But why did'nt the cameras or mobile scam vans catch them and then ultimately the PC's would not have been hurt, after all they are safety cameras and work wonders in catching speedsters.
