It's now 5 weeks into the new year.
Still no figures from the CSCP for December yet - and therefore 2007.

Maybe they are on a winter break, or need extra time to cook the books. :(

Somebody was crowing in the local press back at he end of November about how the figures were low.... then nothing. :o

Accident target hit early
Published on 28/01/2008

CUMBRIA has come in under the Government’s Killed and Serious Injury (KSI) target in 2007 – three years ahead of the 2010 schedule.

Figures, which have yet to be audited by the Department for Transport, show that last year there were 318 killed and serious injury (KSI) casualties against a 2007 target of 377. The Government’s 2010 target was for a maximum of 333 KSI casualties.

County councillor Ian Stewart, responsible for road safety, said: “Last April brought a warm, early spring and one of the worst KSI totals for a single month for many years.

“However, continued effort from the Safer Roads for Cumbria partners and a change in working patterns by the safety camera team has turned this around, no mean feat when you consider the uphill struggle we faced not to exceed the 2010 target of 333 KSIs but to reach the figure of 377 set for 2007.

“More important than the work put in by road safety professionals is the fact that the general public is seemingly taking on board key messages about safer driving and putting them into practice.

“Although we have one of the lowest fatality totals for years we cannot be complacent; 44 dead on our roads is totally unacceptable and, in the majority of cases, totally preventable.

“As in previous years the majority of deaths on the roads involve local people who are dying on roads they know – or think they know.”

Last year, 33 fatalities were Cumbrian residents and there were 11 deaths from visiting motorists.

In 2006, 47 Cumbrians died compared to 12 from outside the county.

One of the key areas of success was the reduction in the number of young drivers and passengers killed in 2007.

In 2006 there were 15 fatalities in the 16-20 year old age group; in 2007 there were five. In the 16-25 year old age group there was a 42 per cent reduction in KSIs compared to 2006 (11 against 19).

One area of no improvement over the last two years has been those fatal casualties resulting from crashes involving motorcyclists.

During 2006 there were 13 (22 per cent of all 2006 fatal casualties) and in 2007 there were 11 such casualties (25 per cent of all 2007 fatal casualties. In 2005 there was just one motorcycle death.

However, the trend with motorcycle KSIs has veered away from the majority being from outside Cumbria to a rise in “home grown” casualties seemingly involving the use of 500cc-plus vehicles being used for commuting.

 to all who have achieved it.

:flamethrow: To those who winge and moan

I note that now you have the figures up on the CSCP site, that we have the smallest decrease in SI's for some time, and the first INCREASE in slight injuries!

Quote:
“Although we have one of the lowest fatality totals for years we cannot be complacent; 44 dead on our roads is totally unacceptable and, in the majority of cases, totally preventable.

Ahh, so accidents which have nothing to do with illegal speeding, have magically been reduced by a device which is punishing an ever increasing number of speeding motorists, and this is being hailed as a success?

Hence:
Quote:
and, in the majority of cases, totally preventable If only the government took the trouble to address the real causes of accidents and injuries, and didn't trust to luck!.

:welcome: BlobbyBlobby! Always good to see NEW faces on here!!

I'm afraid I have to disagree with your rosy assessment of the situation though! The same claptrap was in the Whitehaven News a while back. Usual mutual backslapping by CSCP's little team!

"...However, continued effort from the Safer Roads for Cumbria partners and a change in working patterns by the safety camera team has turned this around..."

Yeah, right! One can clearly see the marked drop in KSIs at the point where hypothecation ended and the "changes in working patterns" came in last year. Anyone care to point it out???

And then, of course, we need to look at things OTHER than CSCP's efforts that might have contributed this year too. Well, there's the continuing general trend for safer cars - but they ignore that every year so I don't suppose 2007 should be any different should it? It's not like it hasn't been said before but it seems to fall on deaf ears at CSCP - unless they can demonstrate a reduction OVER AND ABOVE THE PREVIOUS LONG TERM TREND, they can't start patting themselves on the back!!!

And of course, pretty much all last year the Cumberland Gap was under road works and all it's notorious lay-bys were closed off. That could usually be relied upon for a few KSIs each year in the past!

Hmm, unaudited figures from the organisation with a vested interest in them?

How about hospitalisation figures, since its been proven time and time again that the SCPs are untrustworthy with their own reporting.

At least it's nice to know that they read here, and take note when we point out that they have been a bit slow getting the figures up!

However, BlobbyBlobby cannot change his spots, and like the Firefox saga, cant help believing in the infallibility of his figures!

Cllr. Ian Stewart is the councillor recently savaged in the letters column of the Westmorland gazette for attempting to get a 20 mph speed limit imposed in Arnside.
Apparently the present 30 mph limit is broken with impunity, (it's a long way to send a talivan for so little revenue) so local residents were concerned it would be a waste of time, and an inconvenience to them!

Ian Stewart had sent out a questionnaire to them, but was then unable to answer questions put to him about statements in it!
Sounds like it was written for him, and somebody else was pulling the puppet's strings!

You will be heartened to hear that we have had only 3 deaths in Cumbria so far - on the CSCP website that is!
Due to a shortage of manpower, the year stopped like a badly attended grandfather clock in January.

Maybe Blobbyblobby (yes he LOOKS a bit like his handle!) could lend a hand to get it started again.

There has been no new posted since July 2007 http://www.cumbriasafetycameras.org/index.php?news
Quote:
Residents were also asked what driver behaviour annoys them the most and tailgating and driving too close came out well ahead with 42%. Dangerous overtaking followed at 8%; drivers using mobile phones, 6%; driving too slowly, 6%; not indicating 5%; and cutting in at 4%.

So 71% of responses dont feature speeding as an undesirable behaviour! :P
This itself was te first piece of news since 2006!!

Yet again Callaghan comes onto a forum and pretends to be a random disinterested member of the public. Why is he so consistently dishonest? Whether it's reporting of figures, expressing public support of his thieving operations, or most other things, you've simply never been able to trust him. I don't know what he's doing now but I suspect it's a job which is just as unworthy and mean-spirited as before. I don't know what the real Blobby's doing now either but I bet he's been far more helpful to road safety in the last decade than Callaghan.

A big wrinkle in the stats yesterday...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/cumbria/7344883.stm
Quote:
Four people have been killed and three others injured in a road crash in the Lake District, police said.

The driver and two passengers of a Ford Fiesta and the driver of a Vauxhall Astra died in the collision.

A third car, a Chrysler Neon, was also involved in the accident at about 2000 BST on Saturday on the A595 in Moota, near Cockermouth in Cumbria.

An inquiry into the cause of the crash, which happened on a long, straight stretch of the road, has begun.

A woman who was a front seat passenger in the Fiesta was taken to West Cumberland Hospital, in Whitehaven, after suffering "serious injuries", Cumbria Police said.

The male driver of the Neon and his male front seat passenger suffered minor injuries and were taken to the same hospital.

Fire crews spent more than four hours at the scene dealing with the aftermath of the crash.

Station Officer Dave McDonald, of Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, said: "When we got there, they were a number of vehicles involved, two of which were on fire.

"We used hose reels to put the fire out. The second crew used cutting gear to release the casualties."

Two of the cars were heading northbound on the single carriageway road while the third was being driven south when the crash happened, police said.

Police said they thought the road had been "damp but not wet" and there was no fog.

The A595 between Bothel and Papcastle was closed for several hours but reopened at 0330 BST on Sunday.

The vehicles have been taken away for inspection.

Long straight stretch of road seems to indicate that this involves inappropriate manouvre on the part of one vehicle.

Very sad to hear about and my condolences to the families involved. I wouldn’t want to speculate at this time but, I’d be interested to know the age of the people involved.

I hesitated at guessing - I'll let you know in due course - it's usually posted up locally once relatives have been informed.

UPDATED: Four killed in three-car crash

Last updated 13:08, Sunday, 13 April 2008

Police say the four people killed in a horrific crash last night included three women in the same car.
* View more: crash scene photos

The force confirmed they were the driver and back seat passengers in a Ford Fiesta involved in a smash with two other cars on the A595 at Moota at 8pm.

A 21-year-old woman from west Cumbria, who was the front-seat passenger in the car, was taken to the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven with serious injuries.

She was later transferred to hospital in Newcastle where she was this afternoon said to be in a critical but stable condition.

The other person killed in the crash was the driver of a Vauxhall Astra, who died at the scene.

Two men from west Cumbria who were in the third car, a Chrysler, suffered minor injuries and were taken to the West Cumberland.

Police are urging anyone who saw the crash or any of the vehicles being driven just before the collision to contact them.

They say they urgently need to talk to a man who stopped at the scene and gave a brief statement before moving on.

A police spokesman said officers had not been able to contact him and want him to get in touch as he may be a key witness.

A fatal collision investigation is underway.

The A595 between Bothel and Papcastle was closed for several hours but reopened at about 3.30am today .

The Chrysler and the Astra were travelling in the SAME direction, the Fiesta was the oncoming vehicle to the other two.

It's odd - I drove that stretch of road this evening. It's a very long straight but with a couple of blind crests in it. I initially assumed that it was an overtaking accident with someone overtaking on one of the crests but if the churned-up grass and flowers I passed are at the exact location, it's actually in a hollow with excellent visibility for a very long way in both directions.

There is a small road to Plumbland forming a T junction with the main road an I wondered whether someone had pulled out of the junction but the papers say otherwise.

Either way, a terrible case and I feel for the bereaved. I can't imagine what they must be going through just now.

Sadly the front seat passenger in the Fiesta has died in hospital - 4 members of the same family.

Police have also been appealing for more information about the Astra, and the manner in which it had been driven earlier in the evening.

However, following my earlier comment in this thread, regarding the tardiness of the CSCP in posting up the stats, they have now released the figures to March.

Sadly there have been EIGHT deaths in Cumbria so far this month.
Added to the 8 deaths in January, Febuary, and March, that makes SIXTEEN deaths so far in 2008 - nearly one a week!

Apparently cameras ARE working - drivers seem not to be dying in front of the cameras, but instead are tragically coming to grief just a short distance away.

It's too soon to say if the wheels have come off the road safety campaign in Cumbria permanently... in the past they have been quick to claim they had achieved their target ahead of the 2010 deadline, but are unlikely to be so quick to admit they are failing so quickly!

Maybe they should reprise the information which was REMOVED from the Cumbria "Safety" Camera Partnership website...
Quote:
In Penrith town, there are four distinct time periods for fatal and serious injury accidents – 9-10am, 12noon and 2pm, 4-6pm and 7-9pm

The A686 between Penrith and Alston had more accidents over the past three years than any other road in the area

Almost all accidents occur while vehicles were travelling straight ahead although turning right and overtaking also featured in the causation records

Most fatal and serious injury accidents in the Kendal rural area occur between 12 noon and 5pm

In common with other areas, most fatal and serious injury accidents occurred in fine, dry weather and on 30mph roads

Virtually all fatal and serious injury accidents in the South Lakes area occurred in fine, dry weather and in daylight

The majority of fatal and serious injury accidents occur in fine, dry weather without high winds and on 60mph national speed limit roads

In town almost all fatal and serious injury accidents occurred on 30mph roads

Most accidents occur on A class and unclassified roads and in fine, dry weather and day light

In Kendal town, there are three distinct time peaks for accidents – between 7am and 9am, between 12 noon and 1pm and between 3pm and 5pm.
Most fatal and serious injury accidents in the Penrith rural area occur between 12noon and 5pm

In 2004 there was a 67 per cent reduction in people killed and seriously injured at the hotspots monitored by CSC

In the Barrow area, most accidents occur at times when people are driving to or from work

NOWHERE in there does it say that drivers breaking the speed limit are responsible, yet they continue to put so much effort into penalising hapless drivers who have strayed over the limit!!

Strange that - there was a boast in my local paper by our lot last year stating that they had done likewise .Could it be the forerunner of an excuse for running things down businesswise???/ any other areas seen similar boastings ??
