Quote:
Pedestrian dies after collision in Windermere

A man has died in hospital after receiving serious injuries in a collision with a Volkswagen car in Windermere on Christmas Day.

William Byrne, 78, of Birthwaite, was walking along the A591 near to St Mary's Church when the collision took place.

A 63-year-old man from Windermere has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He has been bailed by police pending further inquiries until 16 March.

Mr Byrne died at the Royal Lancaster hospital on Monday.

Police are appealing for information.

I used to work with William - and despite his age he was fit and able, and walked the same route everyday from the Sheltered Housing scheme up the hill into Windermere and back.

Unfortunately, the driver appears to have failed to clear his windscreen before setting off, resulting in this accident and death.

I was taken off my bike some years back by a woman who had failed to clear the snow from her rear windscreen, and so was utterly unaware of my presence as she swung into me. I know it's cold, but why sacrifice situational awareness and thus endanger life? I personally clear every area of transparency that I am able to, it all feeds in to the big picture.

Robin - no lecture - but , I take the view that inside /behind a car ,the driver in front has not seen me till there is proof that he/she has seen me( and in that situation ,it's MY responsibility to keep safe) -that's in a car ,and I will use horn to re-inforce that and let them know that I am about . On a bike -I'd be very wary of any driver till I knew they'd seen /acknoledged me .Old dad to son proverb -"better to be live coward than dead hero" -that came from man that I've just found out was in a lot of action in WW2 - like Monte Casino -and was regarded by his batallion mates as a hero .
Personally ,i'd like to see Police vehicles stopping cars with windscreen /front windows (at the bare minimum) with ice/snow -or at least till the windows were clear -or issueing a FPN for due care /whatever appropriate .But then ,I'd also like to see police stoping bikers on icy footpaths and issueing FPN for cycling without due care .Sort of sauce for the goose .And BTW -I'm also getting a bit P**d off in my local park at night taking doggy for walks with "cyclists " with little/no lights ,on icy paths expecting me/my mrs/dog to give them right of way on pedestrian territory . All of these paths have the "no cycling" signs - and I've even seen PCSO( in pairs - they don't venture out alone -wonder why ??) on these paths -so what hope for the average cyclist ?

There have been some dreadful photos in the paper.. including one down south whereby some pensioner cleared two "peepholes"

 :( :x All the police reportedly did was give her a scraper.

:furious:

:banghead:

Surely that's better than stealing from her, which they normally would do?

Thanks for the tip mate, I've been doing this a while and I do know how to ride defensively! Had I not been prepared for it as she swung across the zig-zags in an attempt to meet me on the slip road she would have clattered me sideways at 70mph. Thankfully I was able to let her in front of me with some nifty braking on the icy road, unfortunately I could not outbrake her with 2" stopping distance, but it could have been worse!

Point from previous post stands.
