Man killed while warning of multiple crash in Cumbria

A man killed at the scene of a multiple car crash in Cumbria was trying to warn others of the collision when he was struck by another vehicle, police said.

The body of Stuart Shaw, 31, from Ulverston, was found by the side of the A590 and Lindale, near Grange-over-Sands on Wednesday morning.

No-one else was hurt in the incident, when at least three vehicles collided in icy conditions.

Cumbria Police said Mr Shaw was on foot and trying to alert other drivers.

Road closed

A force spokesman said his car was found close by.
He added: "Police received a call from the ambulance service reporting a collision on the eastbound side of Lindale Hill on the A590.

"The road conditions were icy at the time and the collision involved several vehicles, including a black Vauxhall Corsa, a black Seat Ibiza, and a green Fiat."

The eastbound A590 was closed for eight hours while the scene was cleared.

Police appealed for witnesses.

Elsewhere in Cumbria, a female driver has died in hospital two days after running off the road, and hitting a tree on the A591, at Bothal near Keswick. not a good start to 2011. :(
