There was an article in the paper the other day about kids being stopped from playing football (complete with errected goalposts etc.) in a cul-de-sac when neighbours and motorists complained. The tone of the article was "overbearing authority stops bit of fun".

Ignoring the aggravation to those living in the road, is the playing of games in the street leading children to ignore road safety? Surely, playing in the road is asking for trouble as the mindset that it is OK is transferred elsewhere.

Im just reminded about what happens if an emergency vehicle needs access. Some people seem to think that pedestrians have no responsibilities on the road.

I can't see it being too popular with "rat runners" if it was a cul-de-sac! Typical hysterical response that we often get without actually letting any facts get in the way of the argument

is it? We used to play cricket on the road all the time when I was growing up. Of course, couldn't do it on the same road now due to the hugely increased traffic, but I don't think my road sense was adversely affected by this activity.
Ignoring other problems, especially parked cars, I can't see any problem doing the same on a quiet road/cul-de-sac if they're getting out of the way of anyone wanting to go through.

Totally agree. --Seems to have been a PC idea that streets were "playstreets " - with two problems - the safety of the children (from their own actions -forgetting about traffic to control a ball ---much like the mobile phone syndrome) --, the lack of courtesy/ respect to vehicle owners. Nice to see the damage to a windscreen/paintwork done by a football with grit embedded in it. Lot of places -try asking kids to show some respect --you end up with wing mirrors hanging off.
LAs now seem to be going off the idea of playstreet - and erecting games arreas (MUGA) locally for the kids to use .
