Is the training those of us got at school so different to C.O.A.S.T. principles. Well ,we were taught to check/adjust brakes ,check tyres etc, but I remember road safety training. And the basics of HC. I remember I had no problems with it on my test- it was ingrained from school safety training. The few pounds my LA had invested made my transition into driving a lot easier. Perhaps we need lessons in HC as part of the National Curriculum.Additionally a certificate in HC might be an advantage to a future driver. Nice idea.

The Government and Local Authorities are not interested in giving "advantage to a future driver". They actually want to put off all young people from driving to ease congestion and claim reduced deaths in this age group. This BBC article give you a flavour.

Don't get them young and train them early to be safe. Just the reverse.

Boris has talked about "investing" £1Bn in cycling. Perhaps some of that could go on compulsory training and qualifications for cyclists.

Quite agree Malcolm. But it might make more folk aware of the need to care/lookout for their own safety . Ask anyone who's worked up a ladder if they would walk under one . I wouldn't as I know how high (even with all safety considerations taken into account) the risk is . I'll even pose a question- on a bicycle ,what happens to braking distance in the wet .
Does it
1) diminish
2) increase
3) you won't stop in any short distance .
