Whether or not the indication is intentional or accurate, it reinforces options that are not available to me.

Yeah... we're really getting there now. :yesyes:

And in fact the truth is the exact opposite of the expectation.

Actually, you jumped back in just before I was about to edit my comment.

An indicator has an even greater negative effect on me than I realised - it complicates an otherwise simply decision.

Waiting at said junction, an approaching car without an indicator flashing will mean I simply wait. If the car is indicating to turn into my road, I still need to wait but, in addition, I'm now unsure of his intentions.

I was beginning to think that perhaps indicators do more harm than good...

But they do help us with anticipation, even actual prediction. One of the fine pieces of advice in MIND DRIVING is the word pair: Be predictable. That says a lot in two words, that does.

Yeah. I don't think it's all bad news for the indicator.

We are constantly having to make judgements on the likely behaviour of our fellow road users. Indicators are often one piece of the jigsaw that we complete. Even inappropriate use can tell us something about the driver - if not their intended manoeuvre! :)
