I cannot understand why the DVLA needs to "endorse" the physical licence.

In Australia the points just add up and you get a warning when points are added to your licence. When they reach the maximum 12 points in three years you get a letter giving you two options, both of which involve loss of license. Once you choose the method your license is suspended and you have to hand it back.

The police have no need to know how many points are on your license, the only need to know if you have one. You can be on 11 points but it makes absolutely no difference to your rights to drive.

Our insurance policies always have a caveat that you must notifiy them of any issue that might change the way they view the risk and that includes speeding fines, so why do you need your license endorsed?

Sounds like a bullshit system to me.

It doesn't.

Either it's a throwback to pre-computerised days or it is for personal record.

You be issued with penalty points even if you do not have a licence.
