Some years ago there was an experiment done that involved putting black boxes in people's cars and asking them to drive normally. On a typical journey, 99% of men and 97% of women exceeded a speed limit on at least one occasion.

Government surveys consistently show a substantial majority of vehicles exceeding the speed limit on many classes of roads.

Why do you think this is?

Is it because a majority of your fellow human beings are antisocial bastards?

Mosis,
Do you own and drive a vehicle?
Have you ever exceeded the speed limit anywere, anytime?
Do you drive at least 10k miles a year?

I don't think anyone on this forum would encourage reckless or dangerous driving in any circumstance. What I think we are saying is that speed cameras don't work, this doesn't mean that we all want to go as fast as we can everywere we go just that speed cameras aren't the solution to safer raods.

We could fit a 30mph governer to all vehicles or have a man with a red flag walk in front of your car. This would save countless lives, but it's not very efficient. The government could try a host of other traffic safety measures like:

Improving poor road layout - very costly
Improving driver training - who would pay to put all motorists through advaced training.
Fit tachographs to all vehicles - who would pay to have them fitted?
I could go on....

Mosis,
will speed cameras stop accidents in severe weather conditions, black ice, fog, gales etc?
will speed cameras help a driver see a motorcycle before he pulls out of a junction?
Will speed cameras stop a drunk driver or slow a getaway car in a bank robbery?
Will speed cameras stop accidents caused by mechanical failure?
Will speed cameras stop accidents caused by ill health, heart attack etc?

And finally are you playing devils advocate or are you really that naive?
