I could see an advanced sat nav with transponders showing up as dots on the display. Especially motorbikes, blue light users, trains on crossings and queues. The system would have to be inteligent enough to zoom in and out depending on the speed or city/rural locations.
Cumbria could fit transponders to all thier sheep

You could have a big LED across your boot,
with a voice recognition system in the car so
you say "OI, BACK OFF!" and there it is, bigger
than your number plate! This can be a black
panel, it wouldn't look "un-cool" because it could
be black with red or white LED's

The stuff I would invent if I had the time/money/patience.
Not that it would necessarily take off but...

Well there you go car manafacturers,
go run with this freely provided idea!

Vehicle safety really took off in the 90s with the widespread introduction of airbags, seatbelt tensioners, side impact protection and more advanced crumple zones. But it looks like advancement of these technologies is reaching a "plateau" now, with some new ideas urgently required in order to continue the downward trend in road fatalities.

I think putting transponders on vehicles and pedestrians could be such an idea. I don't have the statistics, but I'd guess that "I didn't see them until it was too late" accidents account for a fair proportion of the total. The benefits of a system that would let the driver "see" round bends, behind parked cars etc. are obvious.

With that in mind, I'm sure most people would happily carry a small, cheap transponder (say, the size of a matchbox) if it meant their safety on the roads was improved. Parents would certainly buy them for their children.

Of course, the most expensive part of the system would be the detection eqiupment and heads-up displays inside the vehicles themselves, but perhaps people could be incentivised by lower insurance premiums. Maybe even a Government grant like we had for LPG conversions a few years back.

That is a safety system though for looking
round bends etc...

The original post was for road rage
and how that can be curbed in some way.

Does that come under "safety"? No, well
it isn't "road safety" if someone parks up
properly, then gets out to go and smack
someone for cutting them up! It is only
road rage to me.

Quote:
I am looking at this area as a result of road rage,
and events being caused through lack of understanding
why drivers may act in a certain manner.

Apart from knowing their country is eroding by the day
and not being able to stop it, I think summer makes people
more agitated, heh, if you have no air conditioning that is.

Its hard to say what "causes" road rage. All manner of things
related to driving and probably even more things besides.
How are we to know some guy had a plate thrown at him by
his wife over breakfast?! Only he knows that and he might just
get cut up and react to it whereas he might usually just say

"F****** BMW DRIVER AGAIN!"

If you want a way to stop physical confrontations,
do the LED banner thing I said, but then people without
them would get 10 times madder at you, telling them to
back off etc will make them far worse! Might be a deterrent
but then they also have deterrents, one on the end of each
arm called fists, so I think winding people up in this way would
not work.

Everytime I see a Smart car it is enough to give me road rage!
I deteste those stupid little things! Then you see them going 90MPH
and I think, that is the definition of unsafe. So tacky, so "smart" grrr
they ANGER ME! Since when has designing an incredibly annoying
looking car been "smart" uh?!
