We had long a discussion recently on the three terms of the 'position hierarchy'...

- position for safety
- position for view
- position for grip advantage

The new 4th term is:

- position for shortest route

This has been of significant assistance to me in the last week. I first noticed that I could overtake faster on motorways in my underpowered campervan on right hand bends. Since then I have been holding the L1 position on left hand bends for longer and favouring L2 and L3 on right hand bends when traffic permits. It's definitely helping overtaking and space management, but with decent power in the past I'd never noticed. Now I have no power in reserve, I'm finding it quite helpful.

:yesyes: I'd not realised I do this subconsciously even in cars with adequate reserve, but I do - and I definitely do when I'm in underpowered stuff (provided to do so would not inconvenience a fastard behind me of course).

I was taught that wherever it's safe to do so, you should use as much of the entire width of the available road as possible.

In your case Paul, I suppose it must be a bit like taking the 'racing' like where you travel the shortest distance while making best use of the power and speed available to you.

Not that it'd make a huge difference, but it's probably more economical too.

Nope - the 'racing line' gives you the grip advantage in the third term.

I see a bit of a conflict.
Most would read that as the straightest route - in your example, it's probably the least-straight option (although that does depend on where you start and finish your route).
