Hi there,

I've not been very lucky with driving and the law so far. I lost my licence a couple of years ago because I got two sets of 3 points under two years from passing my test - I got my license revoked and had to pass my tests again.

I have been fine until this week when I was driving back from Brighton at around 1:00 am and I went through a traffic light that turned to amber and red too late for me to safely slow down and it flashed twice.

I know that I won't lose my license if I get 9 points but I'd really like to avoid it if possible - the lights didn't give me enough time to stop, and I was going at the speed limit. Nothing has come through yet, but has anyone got any advice?

Also, when happens IF you get 12 points? Do you get a ban, and if so, what happens when you get your license back, do you still have 12 and can get up to 24?

I'm confused and very stressed about all of this. :(

Kind regards,

sad_muso

having your licence revoked as a new driver is different to getting banned.
If you got to 12 points you would face a 6 month ban and your licence would be reset to zero points. If you aspired to another 12 points you would be banned again probobly for longer.

I know how easy it is to get a ticket as a musician returning from a gig in the early hours on an empty road. My advice would be to plan your routes to avoid all the cameras using a road atlas with the cameras printed in.
Any town with too many cameras... tell them to stuff thier gigs

You may get lucky: the camera may have run out of film.

Interesting! There could be something to this.

- Were you already prepared to stop as you approached the lights? (adequate forward planning)
- How long did it take for you to deduce you could not stop safely before the stop line?
- What was the speed limit?
- Could you go back and accurately measure the amber time?

Haha, yeah, I was coming back from playing a gig as it happens!!!

I don't know, I get the feeling the points will come through. How long do they usually take?

Damn it - the letter asking who was the driver has come through. Looks like there's nothing I can do in this situation :(

A sad day indeed! :(

With regards to the questions, well, I was going along at 30mph, and the lights went to amber around 2 seconds before I crossed the line, then hit red pretty much when I went over line - it was all very tight timing-wise.

It's not like I deliberately ran a red light or anything.

Thought about the possibility of saying that someone was close behind me so I couldn't safely stop, but would the cameras prove that no one was behind?
