Hi Im new to this site and I have a query.

Yesterday morning I was travelling to work and I passed a traffic light camera with the following sign attached to it: "Road Safety Camera Testing Only". I didn't take much notice of the sign, however when I went through the traffic lights on GREEN, the camera flashed me!!!!

Can anyone tell me if I should expect a prosecution?

If so, how do I go about telling the police the camera was faulty, the lights were definitley on green as I went through them.

Thanks

Hello there!

Was it on a reeeally tall pole?

It could be a RedSpeed device (made by a company with the same name). These are red light cameras when the lights are red and speed cameras at all other times. They are, I believe, easy to control remotely and so they can set the speed threshold very low for testing purposes, therefore being set off by most people driving along.

If it was one on a very tall pole (vandal proof, they say) then it'll be nothing to worry about. They will have photos of you driving through a green light and a recording of the speed you were doing. If you weren't exceeding the speed limit then they'll have a photo of you not speeding. Lucky them. I wonder if you can ask for a copy under the Data Protection Act?

Road safety = flashing bright light at people who aren't even breaking any laws... Yeah.

It was the RedSpeed device after looking on the internet at them, I'm almost positive I wasn't speeding because I do know that the camera is there and I know I may have to brake suddenly if the traffic light turns to red.

What concerns me is the sign that was on it, as far as I know it IS only a red light camera, not a speed camera.

I think I'm worrying abouth nothing, as usual.

RedSpeed cameras can be set to detect either/both red light violations and speed violations, hence the name ;)

IIRC, I believe these can only be used in the rear facing mode only (due to the flash, just like a gatso).

Rear only. Else how do they see the lights were red? ;)

According to the Home Office web site the only speed camera type approved for front photography is the Truvelo Combi SMc. Or however it's written.

They are ugly but they're high up to make up for it...

:rotfl:

On a serious note, if they're that high, are they able to read your plate if your vehicle has a bit of an overhang over your plate?

Reason I ask, is I've seen some motorbikes that have their plate quite deep under the saddle...

That, assuming it is a standard setup, is the angle which the photos will be taken at. Not as steep as I would have thought!
