I think I was flashed by a speed camera today, but I was only doing 30. In fact, I'd been checking my speed anyway, and just as I (think I) saw the flash, I'd put my foot over the brake, ready, for the red light at a crossing, just beyond the camera.

Has anyone ever been fined when they HAVEN'T been speeding, and can anyone tell me what I should do? Should I insist on going to Court, and also, do they have a certain number of days to advise you - think I read that somewhere?
Any information / advice, would be appreciated.
:x

Probably, although a lot more have been fined when they claim they weren't speeding.
Note that the two are not the same thing but I seriously doubt you will get fined if the camera imagery shows you weren't speeding. What may happen, and what the SCPs will contest, is that the camera technology screws up and produces an image showing your vehicle speeding when it may not have been.

Kim, if you where only doing 30mph then you should have nothing to worry about. They have 14 days in which to send you a NIP, so you'll have to wait until you receive the NIP before anyone can give you any further advice.

Thank you - I'll ask for further advice, if and when I hear anything.

We had the Ings scam frothing and foaming .. flashing at anything moving - including a cyclist once

Our trio of "submarinated ones" at first denied a problem.. then admitted on the radio "that they were testing the device and only those above the limit would be prosecuted"

Needless to say the local radio got submerged in angry phone calls ..

Might have had no film .. I understand that caused them to flash willy nilly or the on-coming car trigged a flash.

If anything does come (and I do think you will be OK) - ask to see the photos and then contact all the tabloids. Lorry driver was able to prove with a tacho and another driver from the TWO photo images.

Given a recent ruling in Scotland - you may even now be able to bring in the doubt of when actually calibrated ;)

That might actually be true.
If I remember correctly they are RedSpeed devices, which are remotely configurable and use a digital camera, so there is no film wastage in photographing every vehicle which passes. The question is why take our photographs for no reason?

Yes, plenty.

Providing the two images are taken at the correct time interval you can use the road markings to calculate the true speed.

The camera partnership is supposed to do this secondary check before issuing a NIP but we know from experience that some slip through the net.

Is the time (to one hundredth of a second) stamped on the images?

Speed cameras need to have two photos with your car tagged against the white lines on the road way.... your speed can be readily calculated by the amount of white lines between first and second flash.

as to why it flashed.... could be that someone going in the opposite direction was speeding and the sensor picked them up... i used to have great fun speeding towards Gatsos on my bike and getting them to flash off and waste film.... childish perhaps but some small recompense for their idiotic presence on our roads....
