As the title suggests really, I was "caught" going through a red light with a full length HGV, in reality it was too late for me to stop safely and as the crossroads was clear(it was the middle of the night) the safest thing was to go through, trouble is I was flashed twice by a red light camera. Anyway enough of the reasons..sorry "excuses" I know that if the camera had film in it to expect 3 points and a £60 fine but after reading about how these cameras work I was wondering if they can actually pick up the rear end of a trailer if they are triggered by the front wheels going over a certain point in the road I am hoping that maybe all it would get is a nice picture of the side of my trailer, anyone have any ideas on this?

Thanks!

Yes.

The camera could be triggered twice, once by the front wheels, once by the rear ones.

Of course it's worth making sure the traffic lights comply with the law.

I'm fairly sure they're actuated by the metal inductance, hence why cyclists with barely any metal near the road can't alter them.

Of course the law will let you off if you believed that stopping would cause an accident.

I believe the red light camera use piezo strips.
The vehicle detectors for the traffic signals are inductive loops (or radar, but they're obvious), I'm not sure if they use piezos.

red light cameras flash as soon as your front end goes over the line...so if you got big long truck chances are you are safe..... :bounce1:

Then they'll go off again when the rear axle goes over. You'd have to be going pretty fast to get a whole lorry over the line before the camera has had time to wind on. ;)

As A HGV driver myself I would think that unless you were flashed twice (as you say you were) the thing to think of is what is the position of your tractor unit no. plate n/s or o/s say on the rear wing where they usually are positioned?

Also if it flashed your trailer are there any identifying letters such as company / trailer / depot no. to trace the vehicle from?
