Usually like this - like a skinny speed camera. :)

No, the little thing on top of the traffic light that looks like a cctv is usually a vehicle detecting sensor to see if the lights need to change. So you _should_ be ok this time.

Put it down to experience, and next time, obey the :trafficlight: ; even if there's no :camera: there may be a :stop: lurking about...

This site has a smilie for everything!!!

Hence the user name?

Bear in mind that the cameras give you a little (memory says 2 secs - anyone?) leeway on red anyway so even if there had been a camera, it doesn't automatically mean you would've got caught.

I believe the camera will activate after 1 second of red, maybe longer but it shouldn't be shorter. (the timing is adjustable)

Also it has to have the lights in the photo to prove that they were really on red, which rather limits where it can be placed.

Story (or is it rumour ) that certain of these red light cameras are also speed cameras when not on red light duty -anyone confirm /deny

RedSpeed make three devices, which all look pretty much the same from the outside. SpeedCurb (speed camera), REdGuard (red light camera) and RedSpeed (both).

i'm sure someone will correct me if i'm wrong but isn't the minimum amber time 3 seconds ?
where were you looking for those 3 seconds that meant you couldnt pick up a change in the lights! :D

yes.. please concentrate.

(ramp metering lights on slip roads to motorways seem to be a law unto their own however..... fortunately i've yet to see a camera on one!)

Minimum and maximum. ;)

Yes, except those useless "ramp metering" disco lights.

Can anyone give advice? My partner who drives safely and sensibly and within the limit has just had a prosecution notice for a red light camera. I was in the passenger seat at the time - it was late in the evening, with very little traffic, no pedestrians around, and he was just a short distance from the lights when they turned amber ( he was doing 30 in a 30 limit and the camera confirmed this). As he crossed the line the light turned red and we saw the camera flash. I note some people on this forum saying that there is a 2 second delay on these (?) but there is no way he crossed the line before the light turned red, nor would he have done. any ideas on a defence?.

these cameras definatly record your speed when it is activated as a red light camera. However I have not ever read a thread stating that any one has been prosicuted by one of these cameras for speeding even if they had triggered the red light camera.

I believe they dont have type approval as a speed camera or a method of secondary check.
Also they were painted grey and untill recently speed cameras needed to be painted yellow.

From what I remember there should be at least a 1 second delay. The timings will be on the photographs. Do you have both photos? What do they show?
If you can post them here (removing any personal details) that would be good.

There are different devices. The Gatso red light cameras are just that. They do record your speed but are not used as speed cameras.
RedSpeed make a device called the RedSpeed which does both speed camera, and when the lights are red a red light camera. This looks different - very tall pole.
