I have just recieved a NIP. I really really do not want to get points on my licence and all that. I know someone who lives abroad, could I say they were driving? I have read they drop the case if this happens... will they write to the person though? Or check out if they were in the country? And also they are not insured on my car, will they be able to find that out?

£60 fine and 3 points, OR, attempt to pervert the course of justice and risk a £2000+ fine or a prison sentence together with a criminal record. I know which I would choose.

If you really want to avoid points on your licence fight your speeding case. Go to http://www.pepipoo.com/ and ask for advice there.

What you could do is fly to Bulgaria and send a postcard from an imaginary driver and then...oh wait, it's been done...

Take the points and pay the fine. Its a lot less hassle, though bloomin' annoying.

You're getting good advice there generally.

But there are lots of legal ways to fight back if you're up for it.

Plus there are some serious problems emerging with laser speed meters. See Tonight with Trevor MacDonald this evening.

Whatever you do, take your time and do your homework. There's no rush. If they give you 28 days to reply, be sure to take 27.

Paul correct me if I am wrong the only problem with the Lti 20 / 20 is the ones fitted with the camera the stand alones so to speak are 100% I have tried all three lasers that we have and could not get any spurious readings no matter what. We take them to court regularly and show all how they work and let them shw us how they are defective?. 100% successful convincing prosecution. I stand to be corrected though.

I've seen slip effect with my own eyes, and with equipment identical to Home Office approved equipment. It's FAR too easy for such an error to take place unnoticed in both Police hand held operation and in a camera van (connected to video) configuration. I am certain that the equipment is unsuitable for gathering evidence 'beyond a reasonable doubt'.

When the Home Office tested laser speed meters for type approval purposes they did not test for slip effect. If they had, I'm sure that they would not have given type approval. The bottom line is that it's a massive cock up by Home Office staff.

Could the difference you are seeing be (at least partially) to do with distance? The further away the target the greater likelyhood of the slip effect?

A sensible police officer would always use his speed meter at a sensible distance and would never see any problems, however the device is type approved to be used at a much greater distance. A sensible police officer wouldn't even think of using the speed meter at such a distance, but it is allowed and therefore must be accurate at these distances. (999.99 metres?)
