I have received a notice of intended prosecution from a mobile speed camera unit, and I have requested photographic evidence and calibration certificates, as I am certain that I was not driving at the alleged 62mph in a 50mph area.

I have received the information and I have a number of questions arising from this

a) The calibration certificate on the LTI20-20 camera does not have an approval signature

b) the photographs supplied were taken, not in the direction that I first thought towards the camera on the same side of the dual carriageway road, but taken when I was travelling away from the camera unit on the opposite side of the carriageway.

I have been back to the spot where the camera unit was parked and took some photos of my own, and between this and where my car was picked up there are a number of static obstacles like road signs, central reservation barrier that I understand from the news media could impair the accuracy. Equally, there could have been traffic in the opposite direction.

The second photo image is taken with my car at least 300yds away and must have been at a high magnification.

Do I have any chance of using this information to fight my case as I am convinced that I was not speeding?

Such signs will not impair the accuracy of the speed measurement. The gun (which I am assuming is an Lti2020) will simply result with an error reading (unless the signs were of 10m depth from the POV of the operator – which I doubt). Regardless, you should request a copy of the video to see if an object cut through the beam during the speed measurement. The supplier of the gun has recently gone on record saying that the gun is at risk of giving false speed readings if not used within the widely accepted guidelines; the guidelines clearly state there must be continuous line-of-site to the target vehicle during the speed measurement.

An undetected speed error is possible if aiming the beam at the central reservation, this is enabled if the optics are misaligned. You will need to get the video to confirm if the alignment procedure was done correctly; this might require you to plead NG.

I could not comment further without see the photo (edit out your VRM and reference number if you want to post it).


This will show up as the speed reading being positive (no minus sign). You were receding hence your photo should show “ *-62 mph”, not “ * 62 mph”


What distance were you caught at? Can you confirm the distance using tools such as Google Maps? You have a case if you can prove the measured distance to be incorrect.

I thought shooting across carriageways wasn't allowed? Something to do with the device having to be used within X metres of the carriageway, and a dual carriageway being a road comprising two carriageways...

I have not seen a document that explicitly defines and prohibits this.

Could we have some idea of which scamera partnership was involved - some calibration certificates are available online, and others here might have local knowledge of the site, and other cases.
It would also be well worth checking on pepipooregarding this same circumstance, where you might find they too have previous experience.
