True. Abroad - they have flashing ambers - but that's part of their legislation.

We have flashing amber here, on zebra crossings and normal pedestrian crossings. So the concept isn't entirely alien. Flashing amber is good, it allows people to make their own minds up. Ah, I guess we can't be trusted with that.

I had a look on the UK Statute Law Database and couldn't find any of those old acts you mentioned. Where are they? I would like to read through some of them. Especially if they have pictures or diagrams of the signs! ;)

congratulations ziltro on picking out the only bit of IG's post actually related to the topic  :D
(i ran out of popcorn halfway through the latter stages)

The Acts he refer to are mentioned in the forward to "Know Your Traffic Signs" :hehe:

I think he thought it explain that signs cannot be put up willy nilly anywhere - they have to be approved by DfT und Council under some bye-law or other. Ironically Britain led the way of Traffic Signs und Road Safety .. und has been overtaken by Johnny Foreigner  who can all drive faster on them motorways :P But they also have to trial the signs before making them nationalised .. ist why they will not make the sign allowing the cyclist to go through this bus gate thingy. .. but if such gates become more widespread.. I am sure they will concede a sign ist necessary to allow the cyclists to continue accordingly.

I do recommend this book by the way. Ist a useful supplement to Highway Code. Und the Forward "'Istory Lesson" make interesting read whilst in the littlest room

Yep. They're meant to. But then, why is there a set of traffic lights in Bournemouth with amber arrows? (actually, there are two) Why is there a sign in Poole saying "(No motor vehicles) except cycles"? There are so many signs around which look suspiciously like they don't have authorisation. It seems that councils don't really care. They just like to lord it over us with their pointless restrictions.

If they can trial crazy things like random hard shoulder use, random speed limits, pedestrian crossing indicators which are in the wrong place and flashing cats eyes why can't we have flashing amber traffic lights when most if not all other countries have them already?

Could be that these are being trialled and if found to be "successful" - may be passed to go national and included in Highway Code/Know Your Traffic Signs.

But forests of signs are unhelpful to all road users as it can confuse.

It would be nice. Flashing amber would (no, should. can't trust them to be sensible ) normally be used in place of existing signs so would be a good thing.
I have found myself ignoring some signs, because there are too many irrelevant ones. Like roadworks sighs where there is no obstruction to the road. And the 'swervey drivers ahead' signs, I have never felt more swervey near one of them, nor have I seen anyone driving sideways near them.

As for traffic lights, there's a junction in Poole where I would swear there are at least 30 signal heads. Standard crossroads too, with 'slip roads' on to the main road. (two lane dual carriageway)
Strange how it is the closest junction to (ex) Siemens, who make traffic lights. :scratchchin:
