cars are being allowed in bus lanes .. the preserve of cyclists - in a clandestine traffic experiment which has really angered the CTC - tha national cyclists' organisation

Hmmm.. They don't want cycle lanes and in the past complained about them buses in them bus lanes .. I suppose they think cyclsits should be able to ride in that bus lane on the M4 which Sir Terry moans about on behalf of all us TOGs :hehe:

But perhaps the anger has more to do with the apparent "snub"

editor Robert Garbutt's comment wrote:

It caught the CTC completely off guard - it had heard nothing about this from the government. Although campaigners had been in consultation over plans to allow motorbikes to use the bus lanes, the first the CTC knew about the car plans was what it read in the papers.

It seems that Leeds and South Gloucestershire are trialling this plan - aimed at encouraging car sharing by the provision of special lanes. The trials are endorsed by the DfT and explained in an advisory leaflet entitled High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) Lanes.

A HOV is defined as a vehicle with two or more people in them. (That's Smart cars out for starts!)

The pioneering scheme in these trial areas is considering converting existing bus lanes into "HOV" lanes and some way of introducing a HOV lane on a motorway where there are not priority bus facilities.

How about just allowing people to use all available tarmac on these to ensure traffic flows and zip merges as now as not that many work and live in same areas anyway :scratchchin: Or just making flexible and even occasional "work from home days" on some routine jobs.

First to break the news was James Daley in the Indie.

He described the DfT as

:rotfl:

petrolheads for allowing the drivers to "muscle in on the preserve of the cyclist, buses and taxis

Hmmm.. not sure I like the idea of sharing a lane with a taxi driver  and Mad Doc does have that photo of the bus and the local Crown Court

The CTC's Roger Geffen says there is "nothing in the leaaflet about consideration to cyclists.

Quote:

It is inappropriate to mix cars with cyclists and buses

Eh? But if cyclists want to be regarded as normal "traffic" - as they are on all the roads which do not have any "special lanes" - then it's inevitable that they will be "mixed" with all other forms of transport.

Also .. is Geffen now saying he wants "cycle lanes" when in the past we have had so much hoo-ha over "right to use the roads" and so on.

Perhaps if the CTC would grow up and stop seeing every initiative as "discouraging cycling" and cease supporting nuisance factor and highly disruptive Critical Mass nonsense - of which we do require a planned route as it involves members of the public and prior notification should be given for Elf and Safety and to allow us to ensure zero "gridlock" for all other road users - perhaps they might get further.

As for HOV lanes .. personally I think a rod is being built for the public's back as very few neighbours and even spouses work for the same employer or even on the same industrial or nearby industrial estate. It could lead to even heavier queues and one empty and deserted lane.. cyclists apart

If there is nobody on the bus, will they be forced out of the bus lane to make way for multi occupancy vehicles?
I followed the 555 bus out of Kendal today - absolutely gorgeous day, sunny and bright blue sky - ideal weather for sight seeing from top deck of a bus.
It had just TWO people on it!!!
For those who dont know the famous 555, it's a N reg'd post Leyland Atlantean double decker - not a microbus!
VERY environmentally UNfriendly even when FULL!

In free-flowing traffic cyclists should just use the main lanes and motor vehicles should move out to over take them.

In congested traffic, cyclists should be given a safe passageway through the traffic.

How about

|BB|C|RR|

where B is a bus-lane, C cycle-lane, N regular traffic. Actually I have made the cycle lane half the width of a regular lane.

HOV and Bus lanes sound great!
It will keep them pesky cyclists out (unless they buy a tandam and a blow up passenger)
