Belatedly - though I am aware Mad Doc alluded to it in a another thread.

Harry was a stalwart of his generation. He could not afford the fare to join the team in London .. so he rode his comptetion bike down there.. competed in the 1936 Berlin Olympics . won bronze and then cycled home from London afterwards.

During the war - he worked in a munitions factory.. cycling to and from his work daily

Tragically . as a ninety-odd year old . he suffered a fall in his own home and succumbed to pneumonia in hospital as a result.

But Harry's legend will live on. in fond memories of all who saw the film footage of his moment of success. An icon like Sir Chris and his fellow team mates in Beijing last summer  Long may they all live in our memories!

I remember my late father talking about Hill and the other members of that medal winning team. He thought that Hill's greatest achievement was in being the first man to cycle 25 miles in a hour in 1937 at the Vigorelli stadium in Milan. His trip was funded by a public subscription organised by "Cycling" (now CW) which included sixpence from my father

It was a great pity that the British Cycling establishment effectively severed all links with European road cycling in the pre war years. There were many excellent British cyclists who never achieved their full potential because of lack of competition with the world's top cyclists.
