I see that this has been suggested by Boris Johnson's team. It seems a good way to keep cyclists apart from other traffic. What do our keen cyclists think about this?

A few years ago, the railway from Oxenholme on the West Coast main line, to Windermere was upgraded (new ballast and track) at a cost of £7 million.
Every day somewhere, there is a maintenance team working somewhere on that line - sometimes at night.
I suggested then, that they should have uprooted the rail line, and replaced it with a dedicated bus and cycle road, which would allow passengers to be taken through Staveley (station is unsuited for disabled, as it is up a steep set of steps) and onwards after it reached Windermere (Youth hostel is three miles further on).

The Victorian two lines were replaced with single line years ago, and there is lots of room for a cycle track even now at little cost - and the gradient is suitable for novice cyclists, unlike the road route!

Sounds like a great idea to me Malcolm. Would be so much better if the Beeching cuts had never happened, in so many ways, but I can't think of anything bad about it in principle :)

You will be branded a threat to society by going over a speed limit where it is safe to do so, and suffer the consequences of your actions in a way criminals do not, more so than someone who is a real threat to our society.

My only thoughts would be on safety grounds. ie- separation from running lines and a decent separation horizontally from the overhead 25KV .

Really Botach? I've never seen a situation where I could get at the EHT even if there were a trampoline on the platform dude..

I used to live near a train track and canal, Bournville, and I absolutely loved riding and running along the pathway :cloud9: An oasis in the 'concrete jungle' :)

Nine feet clearance is recommended , on the 25KV. Only takes some idiot with a long stick. Inside the fence there's also "red bonds" - never found out what they did, but they got treated with respect, as they could become live .
I used to work alongside a bloke who'd transferred from the OH lot. One of his duties on OH was recovery of bodies. He had some tales to tell .
Then there's third rail ( dan south, places like Watford. That's 650 v DC( rail out side running lines) .And further south, there's fourth rail, where the fourth rail may or may not be live ,depending on whether there's a train around . ( It's in the middle of the two running lines) .

If someone goes out with a big rod and waves it toward a HT/EHT line I would argue they deserve a Darwin award Big Dave/Botach? :D

At what point do we stop the madness of protecting people against their own stupidity?

Now please excuse me while I try to light a fart in a room filled with hydrogen :D

OH,I agree. But some folks just don't think, never mind waving rods at 25kv. They don't know. Seen one truck CB aerial within tracking distance. Next minute ,no tyres. He'd wandered inside the safety zone.
But if the fence was 10' from the nearest line, all would be well. And anything less is going to cause cyclists problems. The sidewash from a 125 train is not nice ,and even at that speed they're almost silent.
Can't see NR going for anything less than that. Too much chance of them being held accountable. I was just pointing out some of the hazards and the attitude towards safety ( based on NR being able to say they'd done all possible)
