Tandem couple killed in Bristol 'hit-and-run' crash 'were trying for children'
Sam Masters -Monday 28 January 2013

A Bristol couple killed after being knocked off their tandem bicycle in an alleged hit-and-run had been given the go-ahead to start IVF treatment shortly before the crash, it has emerged.

Ross Simons, 34, and his wife of 18 months, Clare, 30, died when they were struck by a Citroën Picasso in the Hanham area of Bristol yesterday afternoon. Friends said the pair had been “trying for children” and had just been told they could have fertility treatment. At the time of the collision they were riding a recently bought tandem and were on their way to a family gathering.

“Two young people with their lives in front of them, snapped away just like that,” said a family friend Diane Pullin. She added: “[They had] everything to live for, they were such a lovely family.”

Mrs Pullin said he daughter and son-in-law had been out for a meal with the couple the night before they died. “They desperately wanted children and it wasn’t happening. They’d just been given the go-ahead, they were so happy on Saturday night,” she said.

The Reverend Peter Cook, of Hanham Baptist Church said the incident had ripped the community to its heart. Rev Cook said he stopped a Sunday service and asked his congregation to pray for Mr and Mrs Simons.

Rev Cook said: “You don’t expect it to happening on a Sunday afternoon when you are out for a cycle. I think it was totally out of the ordinary and that’s why people are so shocked.”

Detectives today confirmed that the car involved was being followed by police officers at the time of the incident. The incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Officers have arrested a 38-year-old man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and a woman, 35, on suspicion of dangerous driving. They remain in custody tonight.
Sadly very little detail of the crash is reported but hopefully it will be reported when it all comes to trial. Happily two people have been arrested. Time will show if they are guilty and perhaps what has happened in this case.

Wherever you get a maniac in a car, speed will inevitably be mentioned because maniacs use inappropriate speeds to get away or because they are just a moron! As we’ve often said before, maniacs use knives inappropriately and it would be equally wrong to blame or ban all knives.

I hope the moron in this case goes down and doesn’t come out until he is so old and frail he can’t wipe his own behind, never mind behind the wheel of a car ever again. :x

Maybe not so much a kill switch but something like the BMW J.C. drove on Top Gear, where he accidentally dropped too many gears and the engine management kicked it into a low power mode to get you home. If you just “kill” all power that could have serious implications. Actually anything remote could, and always is, hacked into. So how long before nefarious activities start to control other cars?

I’m reviewing.. the situation...

"Kill switches" sound a good idea until you start to think of the implications: taking responsibility for control of the car away from the driver.

If the authorities had the equipment and codes to imobilise cars remotely then, pretty soon, so would the crooks and rapists. Need I really paint this picture?

No, that was my last point. To use the late Paul Smith's analogy, you wouldn't fix a watch with a hammer..

I guess they tried the 'kill switch' of spikes ... :)
Or failing that the overhead helicopter, or failing that expense perhaps the Police will end up using drones, so they 'target' vehicles that are then followed, and all occupants can be possibly ID'ed and locations known (Police catch them as they stop) and all done by remote control?
