The damage at Kenilworth CommonThe damage at Kenilworth Common
Substantial earthworks have recently been discovered at Kenilworth Common Local Nature Reserve. A team of committed local volunteers from Warwickshire Wildlife Trust, who undertake regular work parties, were appalled to find divots, large holes, hillocks, mounds, and even steps cut into a bank. In addition, a small pond had been partially filled-in and was strewn with branches, and damage had been caused to trees.
Further inspection revealed extensive cycle tyre tracks and soil erosion, pointing to the construction of a makeshift off-piste course, being used by mountain and or BMX bikers.
The damage caused, apart from being outside of the law, could result in the loss of valuable wildlife, including ground flora and amphibians and invertebrates that access the pond for breeding and refuge.
Councillor Moira- Ann Grainger, Portfolio Holder for Health & Community Protection said: "Kenilworth Common is a special place for residents and visitors but a few people are spoiling the enjoyment of others by damaging the woodland environment. The extensive in an attempt to create features has damaged tree routes.
Warwick District Council have been working with local Police who regularly patrol the reserve and volunteers from Warwickshire Wildlife Trust have since carried repairs to the area."
