Turning Left

Seems simple enough…but there are some dangers even here. :?

If you are on a clear road – you can keep to a secondary position

but think to the other quiz on the site.

Why on earth would Ted and I have answered that quiz by answering with the secondary position on a left turn?

What else should you look for on a left turn? Pedestrians apart – there are a number of things to check for.

How would this affect your road position? And which position should you adopt to keep yourself out of danger and under what kind of circumstances?

When should you signal your intention to turn left?

Hopefully, the cyclists amongst us will give the answers straight off. Who knows? Our lurkers may decide we ain't so bad after all and join in.

Quite a few things to ponder over and such a routine move too!

You would not believe how may cyclists end up coming to grief - and iusually by believing that hugging the kerb is the safest policy - and give a clue to the one of the possible answers there

do you actually have to signal to turn left in this country?

Things that come to mind...
Oncoming traffic trying to beat you into the turn. Depending on the timing I might not signal before turning so that oncoming traffic doesn't try to beat me into the corner. Although if possible I'll signal nice and early to give them a chance to go but you have to think about cars in a queue all trying to get through in front of you.
On a busy road with traffic behind waiting to get passed I'll signal earlier than normal so they don't try a stupid overtake.
You want to block any idiot behind you from trying to drive around you in the turn - a good reason for riding wide before the turn
You also want to make sure there are no drain covers or any other crap on the road through the turn. This may involve taking a much wider line through the corner - even out to the centre.
You'll also be looking for all the usual stuff like car doors, pedestrians, cars pulling out of parking spaces etc.
